Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which London church were Prince William and Catherine Middleton married in April 2011?

Answer: Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is inextricably linked with the British monarchy as it has been a place of coronations, weddings and funerals for nearly 1,000 years. Anglo-Saxon King Edward, who was buried there in 1066, originally built the Abbey. Later that year William the Conqueror was crowned there and thirty-seven subsequent coronations have taken place in the Abbey. From the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries further building work was carried out at the Abbey.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were married in Westminster Abbey in 1947 and it was also the venue of Prince William's mother, Diana's, funeral in 1997.

St Paul's Cathedral is well-known for managing to survive the heavy bombing of London during World War II and was also the venue for the 1981 wedding of Prince William's parents, Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.

St George's Cathedral and Westminster Cathedral are both Roman Catholic cathedrals and as such would not be chosen as a venue for a Royal event. The reigning monarch is the head of the Anglican church in Britain so any Royal event has to take place in an Anglican church.

2. Who was the designer of Catherine Middleton's beautiful dress?

Answer: Sarah Burton

Sarah Burton is the lead designer at Alexander McQueen. She was a protégée of McQueen and took over as creative director following his death in 2010. Catherine's dress featured a V-neck, long sleeves and much lace. The lace was all handmade in the UK, and was made up of motifs of roses, thistles, daffodils and shamrocks to represent England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Philip Treacy designed a number of the hats seen on royal heads at the wedding. Catherine Walker, who was a favourite of the late Princess Diana, was the designer of Carole Middleton's "Mother of the Bride" outfit. Angela Kelly, the Queen's personal assistant and dresser, designed Her Majesty's primrose-yellow outfit.
3. How long was the train of Catherine's wedding dress?

Answer: 2.7m

The train which followed Catherine up the red-carpeted aisle was 2.7m long. This was considerably shorter than the 8m train of Princess Diana, Prince William's mother's wedding dress!
4. From which book of the Bible did Catherine's brother James Middleton read the lesson?

Answer: Romans

James Middleton read Romans 12:1, 2, 9-18 from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. This passage talks about presenting oneself as a "living sacrifice" to God and discerning his will for one's life. It exhorts the hearers/readers, among other things, to show genuine love, honour one another, extend hospitality to strangers and live peaceably with everyone as far as is possible.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 is often read at weddings. It describes true love beginning with "Love is patient, love is kind" and ending with "love never fails". (NIV)

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 is another passage commonly read at weddings. These verses speak of the benefit of going through life with someone else by one's side rather than by oneself. Verse 10 says, "If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!" (NIV)

John's Gospel chapter 2 recounts the story of Jesus' attendance at a wedding. It was here that he preformed his first miracle, turning water into wine. This occasion was referred to in the Dean's welcome and introduction to William and Catherine's marriage service.
5. Which of the four younger bridesmaids is Prince William's first cousin?

Answer: Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor

Lady Louise is the daughter of the Earl (Prince Edward) and Countess of Wessex and therefore Prince William's first cousin.

The Hon. Margarita Armstrong-Jones is the daughter of Viscount and Viscountess Linley. Viscount Linley is the son of the late Princess Margaret, the Queen's sister. This makes the Hon. Margarita Prince William's second cousin.

Grace van Custem is Prince Williams' goddaughter and Eliza Lopes is Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall's granddaughter.

6. Which of these these four British Prime Ministers (former or then serving), was not invited to the wedding?

Answer: Tony Blair

There was a certain amount of consternation that Tony Blair and his successor, Gordon Brown, were the only living Prime Ministers not to appear on the guest list. Contrast was made to the wedding of Prince William's parents in 1981 when all the previous Prime Ministers who were still alive, as well as the then serving PM, Margaret Thatcher, were invited. It was pointed out though that despite Prince William's wedding being attended by 1,900 guests and being viewed by an estimated 2 billion people worldwide, it was actually a private event as opposed to a state event! It was therefore the decision of the bride and groom and their advisors as to who should be invited.

Both Baroness Thatcher and Sir John Major are Knights of the Garter as is Prince William, so this was given as the reason for their invitations. David Cameron was invited as the then Prime Minister along with Deputy PM Nick Clegg and Labour Party leader Ed Miliband. Other members of the cabinet including Home Secretary Theresa May, Foreign Secretary William Hague and Justice Secretary Ken Clarke were also present.
7. Which wedding guest's hat, and how it actually remained on her head, was the source of much debate by BBC commentators?

Answer: Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham's headgear, a small oval creation by Philip Treacy, seemed to be more perched against her forehead than on her head. The subject of how the hat actually stayed in place was discussed more than once by the BBC commentators!

Zara Phillips, who is Princess Anne's daughter and therefore Prince William's cousin, wore a large black dish-shaped hat which sat on the right side of her head, with a decorative extension out to the left.

Miriam Gonzalez Durantez, wife of British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, wore what the BBC described as "an exotic orange floral hat".

Princess Beatrice, who as Prince Andrew's eldest daughter is also a cousin of Prince William, wore what is being described as "antlers" on her head. This headwear has spawned a number of Facebook pages and a distinct lack of compliments! Like several of the Royal hats on display it was designed by Philip Treacy.
8. The landau in which William and Catherine were transported from the church to Buckingham Palace was built for the coronation of which monarch?

Answer: Edward VII

The 1902 State Landau was built for Edward VII for his coronation. It is now usually used by the Queen when she meets foreign Heads of State on official visits to Britain. It was also used by Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer for their wedding in 1981, and by Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson when they married in 1986.

9. William drove his bride away from Buckingham Palace after lunch in which make of car?

Answer: Aston Martin

Prince William drove his new wife to Clarence House in a convertible Seychelles-Blue Aston Martin DB6 MKII belonging to his father, who has owned it since 1969. In 2008, at Prince Charles' request, the car was converted to run on E85 bioethanol made from English wine wastage.

10. Upon their marriage which titles were bestowed upon Prince William and Catherine by the Queen?

Answer: Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

Upon their marriage Prince William and Catherine became The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. According to the BBC the Dukedom of Cambridge was created in 1801 but became extinct in 1904 on the death of the Second Duke.

Prince Charles and his wife Camilla are the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall. Prince Edward and his wife Sophie are the Earl and Countess of Wessex.
