Initially playing as members of first the Midlands Counties League, and then the Northern League, the club was one of the founder members of the Football League Second Division, which was established for the 1892-93 season. The club won promotion at the end of its first season in the Football League, and won its first league title in the 1897-98 season. After making a second application for the First Division in 1893, which again was turned down, the club did join the Second Division for the 1893-94 season. Having gained promotion for the first time in 1898, Newcastle United won their first league title in the 1904-05 season, the same year as they reached their first FA Cup final, which they lost 2-0 to Aston Villa. Upon being turned down, the club joined the rival Football Alliance in 1889, which they played in for three seasons, winning the competition's last title in 1892 before joining the Football League the same year. Preston North End FC was officially formed in 1880, and became one of the founder members of the Football League in 1888.

Preston won the inaugural Football League title in the 1888-89 season, which they achieved by a margin of eleven points without losing a game. The same season, the club reached its second (and second successive) FA Cup final - the previous season saw them lose 2-1 to West Bromwich Albion. A decade later, Tottenham became the first club in the 20th century, and the first since 1897, to achieve the league and cup double, when the 1960-61 season saw them win the league title by eight points, and gain victory in the FA Cup final, beating Leicester City 2-0.

Double:
League title - 1994.
FA Cup win - 1994.
Manchester United's formation came about in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR FC, a works team based at the carriage works of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. The club joined the Football Alliance in 1889, playing in the competition for the three seasons of its existence before it merged with the Football League in 1892. By this point, the club became independent of the railway, and dropped the "LYR" from its name. In 1902, following a winding-up order, new investors put money into the club and it changed its name to Manchester United. This led to an upturn for the club, which won its first league title in 1908, and first FA Cup in 1909. Manchester United gained a reputation as a "yo-yo" club up to the Second World War, after which a sustained period of success began during the late 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.

However, it wasn't until the 1990s that this was replicated, following an extended period of mediocrity interspersed with occasional success. The club achieved the double in the 1993-94 season, winning the league title by eight points, and beating Chelsea 4-0 in the FA Cup final. Manchester United won the Double three times in the 1990s decade: 1994, 1996 and 1999. However, the club only achieved intermittent success in its early years, and only won its first major title in 1955, when it won the league title for the first time. Chelsea won the FA Cup for the first time in 1970, the club's third appearance in the final, beating Leeds United after a replay. However, it was only after the turn of the 21st century that Chelsea began to have sustained success, which included winning the double in 2009-10, with the league title won by a single point, and the FA Cup gained by beating Portsmouth 1-0 in the final.

Initially named as St Mark's (West Gorton) FC. The club's initial success led to it moving to the Ardwick district in 1887, which saw it renamed as Ardwick AFC, and led to it joining the Football Alliance in 1891. Following the merger between the Alliance and the Football League the following year, the club became members of the Second Division. Financial difficulties in 1894 saw the club reorganised, and renamed, becoming Manchester City FC.

The club has often existed in the shadow of its local rival Manchester United, with intermittent success throughout its history - the club's first FA Cup final victory came in 1904, while its first league title was won in 1937 (which was followed by relegation the following season). It was only in the 21st century that Manchester City began to achieve sustained success, with victory in the 2011 FA Cup followed in 2012 by a first league title since 1968.
