Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On your way into Phoenix, you're caught offguard when you see a city with what name?

Answer: Surprise

The city of Surprise is found on the northwestern outskirts of Phoenix. The city has rapidly developed in the early 21st century. The 2000 census pegged the population at roughly 31,000, but nearly 120,000 called Surprise home in 2010. Both the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers call Surprise home for their Spring Training schedule every March. Surprise also has a 10,000 square foot aquatics facility, a 20,000 square foot library, and a drag racing strip.
2. On your way to Cornwall, along the southern coast of England, you insist you must be drunk when you see a sign for a town with what alcoholic name?

Answer: Beer

Beer is a coastal town in Devon, found in Lyme Bay. It is part of the 95 mile long Jurassic Coast. The town is beside Seaton, and about 35 kilometers east of Exeter. The name of the town is not from the beverage enjoyed by so many, but from the word "bearu" meaning "grove". Stone from the Beer Quarry Caves have been used to build landmarks like Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral, and Exeter Cathedral.
3. On your way to Chicago, you are astounded by a 15-foot tall replica of Superman, and a smaller 8-foot statue of Lois Lane. What small, southern Illinois town is this?

Answer: Metropolis

Metropolis is found on the banks of the Ohio River, and is where Interstate 24 crosses over to Kentucky. Not only does the comic book legend drive tourism, Harrah's offers a riverboat casino out of the town, one of the first casinos ever in Illinois. DC Comics officially proclaimed Metropolis the "Hometown of Superman".

The 15 foot bronze statue of the "Man of Steel" was built in 1993, replacing a smaller one was erected in 1986. There is also a Superman museum, and a Superman festival every June.

The name of the local newspaper, "The Metropolis Planet", was inspired by the comic strip paper "The Daily Planet". Robert Franklin Stroud, the infamous "Birdman of Alcatraz" is buried in Metropolis.
4. On your way to Hong Kong, through China, you are impressed with a complete replica of the Alpine hillside town of Hallstatt. In what country is the original, a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Answer: Austria

The duplicate contains houses, churches, and buildings identical to those in Austria. The only real difference is the street signage which is all in Chinese. This whole plan was the idea of China Minmetals Corporation, a Chinese mining company. This attraction is near the town of Huizhou. The duplicate has been endorsed by Austria after an ethics controversy during its construction.
5. On your way through Papua New Guinea, this town name blows you away. What's it called?

Answer: Dead Chinaman

The small community is found in central Papua New Guinea. The remote village is about 150 km north of Port Moresby. The other three towns listed (Disappointment, Acme, and Climax) are all towns in the United States.
6. On your way through Nebraska, this odd attraction catches your eye. It's a Stonehenge doppleganger, but instead of stones, this is made out of what?

Answer: Cars

Carhenge is found just north of the town of Alliance, Nebraska, in northwestern Nebraska. There is no mystical belief about how this statue was built. Jim Reinders collected 38 old cars, and painted them all grey to appear like stones. The cars are arranged in a similar manner to Stonehenge.
7. On your way through Pennsylvania, you ask the obvious question while passing through this town, "Is it worth two in the bush?".

Answer: Bird-in-Hand

Rough & Ready, Intercourse, and Noodle Doosie are all real Pennsylvania towns (they are by far the world capital in this field!), however Bird-in-Hand is the town in question. Bird-in-Hand is only six miles east of Lancaster, and four miles west of Intercourse.

A 1955 Broadway musical called "Plain and Fancy" was set in the town, launching its popularity and boosting tourism in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country.
8. On your way across the island of Madagascar, this town name encourages you to keep moving, maybe a little faster. This town is called what?

Answer: Gogogogo

Gogogogo is near the southern coast of the island. The 2001 census pegged approximately 1,000 people living in the town. Cassava is commonly grown in the area, and more than half of the population is involved with agriculture. The other three towns do not exist.
9. On your way over Italy, you yell out "Peter" when you spot a giant knitted replica of what animal?

Answer: Rabbit

The 200-foot pink rabbit can be found in Piedmont, in Northern Italy. It was knitted by Gelatin, a Viennese culture group. Visitors can climb on it, and play with it. With the advances in satellite technology, you can see the bunny on the side of the 5,000 foot Coletto Fava mountain in Google Maps. It appears to be dead from overhead, with various knitted guts spilled out on one side.
10. On your way across India, a sign for the Karni Mata Temple intrigues you. After all, the temple is purposefully infested with what?

Answer: Rats

Deshnok, found in Rajasthan is home to this temple. It is believed that the rats inside the temple are members of the Karni goddess' family, a family that changed to rodent form in the 14th century. All of the over 20,000 rats that live in the town of nearly 16,000 humans is considered part of the sacred family, and recieve food and shelter.
