Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Compass Challenge Invitational has finished with the final runners in these finishing positions. Which team won? North: 3, 29, 46, 47, 50, 59 South: 1, 5, 7, 25, 51, 53 East: 2, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 West: 6, 10, 11, 19, 20, 21

Answer: East

In the sport of cross country, the lowest score is the winner. The score is calculated using the finishing placement of the top five runners from any one team:
East - 56
West - 66
South - 89
North - 175.
2. The Compass Challenge Invitational has finished with final runners in these spots, which team placed second? North: 3, 29, 46, 47, 50, 59 South: 1, 5, 7, 25, 51, 53 East: 2, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 West: 6, 10, 11, 19, 20, 21

Answer: West

The second place team finished with a score of 66, only a 10 point spread between first and second:
East - 56
West - 66
South - 89
North - 175.
3. The Compass Challenge Invitational has finished with final runners in these positions. Which team placed third? North: 3, 29, 46, 47, 50, 59 South: 1, 5, 7, 25, 51, 53 East: 2, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 West: 6, 10, 11, 19, 20, 21

Answer: South

Despite having three runners in the top 10, the South team's last two scoring runners pushed the team too far down to challenge for the top spot. Their final team score was an 89, behind East and West:
East -- 56
West -- 66
South -- 89
North - 175.
4. The Compass Challenge Invitational has finished with finishers in these positions -- the West team's bell cow finished in which position? North: 3, 29, 46, 47, 50, 59 South: 1, 5, 7, 25, 51, 53 East: 2, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 West: 6, 10, 11, 19, 20, 21

Answer: 6

A team's bell cow is their top finisher, often the team leader and pace setter. This is one of several names for this individual, sometimes also called the low stick.
5. The Compass Challenge Invitational has finished with final runners in these positions -- the East team's low stick finished in what position? North: 3, 29, 46, 47, 50, 59 South: 1, 5, 7, 25, 51, 53 East: 2, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 West: 6, 10, 11, 19, 20, 21

Answer: 2

The low stick is the top finisher on any one team on a given day. This individual may be the consistent top finisher, or may have just had a good day.
6. The Compass Challenge Invitational has finished with final runners in these spots -- the North team's pack anchor finished in what position? North: 3, 29, 46, 47, 50, 59 South: 1, 5, 7, 25, 51, 53 East: 2, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 West: 6, 10, 11, 19, 20, 21

Answer: 50

Pack running is definitely a thing in cross country, teams grouping together for pacing purposes in an effort to cross the finish line in rapid order. Unfortunately for the North team, the only pack grouping was in the latter end of their scoring runners (46, 47, 50, 59 = pack) with the anchor, the 5th man, finishing in 50th place.

The winning team, East, also had a pack with scoring runners 12-13-14-15-16 all clustered and finishing within seconds of each other.
7. The Compass Challenge Invitational has finished with final runners in these spots -- the East team's pusher finished in what position? North: 3, 29, 46, 47, 50, 59 South: 1, 5, 7, 25, 51, 53 East: 2, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 West: 6, 10, 11, 19, 20, 21

Answer: 16

In cross country, while the top five are the scoring runners, the next two runners are known as pushers. They are crucial, not only serving to push other teams back, but their scores are used in the event of a tie. If the top two team's finishing totals are equal, they use the sixth runner's score as a tie-breaker. If that is still tied, they use the seventh placed runner.
8. The Compass Challenge Invitational has finished with final runners in these spots. Team Southwest made an appearance, sending just two athletes. Which team won the meet? North: 3, 29, 46, 47, 50, 59 Southwest: 4, 18 South: 1, 5, 7, 25, 51, 53 East: 2, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 West: 6, 10, 11, 19, 20, 21

Answer: East

The entrance of a team consisting of only two members has the following effects: they do not earn a team score (you need at least 5 scoring runners) and the positions of those runners offset the remaining team scores. In this example, the East team's final score would be a 55 (instead of 56) because Southwest's 4th place finisher wouldn't be considered in team scoring (like they don't exist).

The individual athlete in those non-scoring teams would get whatever accolades they earn. For example, if a runner from Southwest was the overall winner, they would get their ribbons or medals for the accomplishment.
9. The State Championship is upon us, and this race was hot with two stellar teams duking it out at the top! With runners finishing in these positions, who won? North: 5, 7, 12, 13, 15, 16, 22 South: 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 18, 28 East: 1, 2, 17, 20, 24, 26, 42 West: 3, 4, 27, 36, 49, 52, 53

Answer: North

This was a very real, tricky situation. Both North and South team had the same score of 52, so the pusher's position (the 6th runner who is not normally counted) had to break the tie.
North - 52 .. 6th finished 16th
South - 52 .. 6th finished 18th
East - 64
West - 119.
10. As they say, the helping hand you need is on the end of your own arm. The top two runners of the team are nearing the finish when suddenly, one falters, collapsing to the earth. Her teammate snatches her up, half dragging her across the finish line. Her heroic efforts resulted in two closely related finishing scores: true or false?

Answer: False

Heroics has its place in many sports, but cross country is not one of them. Any interference in a runner's progress (or help in this case) results in the disqualification of that runner. In this case, one or both of the runners assisting each other would have been disqualified. Had they been members of a small team with the minimum five team members, their actions might have resulted in no team score.

A similar scenario happened in the last meet I witnessed. A runner did collapse mere feet from the finish line, completely spent. Trainers were about to jump in to assist him, but from the earth ... the runner had the wherewithal to know what the rule was. He waved them off and crawled on his hands and knees the last few feet to achieve a finishing time and counting placement.
