As Mario travels around the globe in his airship, the Odyssey, with the aim of chasing down Bowser and saving Princess Peach from the wedding of her nightmares, he'll come across regions known as Kingdoms, all of which are stopping points for Bowser and his henchmen as they collect items needed for the ceremony at the end of the line, and in nearly every case, he'll be just behind the King Koopa. The exciting part is that each of these Kingdoms is vastly different from the rest, and each one seems to reflect an environment that might exist in the real world-- polar regions, desert regions, lakes, seasides, cities, you name it. Some are even sillier, taking an almost fantastical approach to the setting the further you go.
The game contains seventeen Kingdoms, each varying in size and complexity, and each of them contains a number of collectable items. Mario is on the hunt for Power Moons to empower the Odyssey's travel capabilities, and these will allow you to progress through the game even if you collect the bare minimum in each area. There are more than eight hundred Power Moons in the game (and no, you don't need that many to finish it). Some of these Kingdoms contain dozens upon dozens of Power Moons. All of them also contain Regional Coins, spendable only in their respective Kingdoms.
The seventeen Kingdoms, in order (or close to it), are the Cap Kingdom, Cascade Kingdom, Sand Kingdom, Lake Kingdom, Wooded Kingdom, Cloud Kingdom, Lost Kingdom, Metro Kingdom, Snow Kingdom, Seaside Kingdom, Luncheon Kingdom, Ruined Kingdom, Bowser's Kingdom, and Moon Kingdom. If you finish off Bowser, you'll gain access to Peach's Castle in the Mushroom Kingdom, and then to further missions in the Dark Side and Darker Side regions.
Each of these Kingdoms connects in unique ways, sometimes through classic 'Mario' means, like travelling through paintings. You shouldn't be too surprised to see denizens of early Kingdoms showing up in later ones and vice versa-- the world is meant to be explored!
