Answer: Sparrow

Sparrow acts as a guardian of the greater Velrune area, positioned in overwatch and ready to shoot down any external threats which appear. Sadly, she very much missed the mark as far as the woodlands of Velrune, which were plowed over and essentially destroyed amidst a war.

Of course, it is not Sparrow's fault that this war occurred, and Sparrow didn't do anything that would make it easier for Mourn and his people to get massacred. The lore never mentions Mourn specifically eyeing Sparrow on his revenge tour, but their close proximity is notable nonetheless.

Answer: Gideon

The lore doesn't offer any specifics as to their relationship, nor does it mention how long their partnership lasted. It does largely suggest, though, that Gideon initiated the break off, and that it was due to Argus' compulsive tendencies.

Answer: Kallari

Kallari, an android herself, brought Boris' destroyed body back to her handlers, who recreated Boris in the same way they created Kallari in making him a feral, raging android bear.

The lore notes that Boris' name is actually an acronym, though it never states what B.O.R.I.S is actually meant to stand for.

Answer: No

A handful of characters, namely Riktor, Lt. Belica and Dekker, have a similar ominous undertone of "why are we doing the things we're doing?" The idea being that these three, along with a few more, find themselves working under an employer that appears content to let them do mostly whatever they want; the saddistic Riktor is given free reign with how he disciplines Orbital Cage prisoners and Dekker is generously funded to do her life's dream as an archaeologist. Yet, each of their lore ends off with them explicitly questioning the purpose of their deeds, the implication being that there is an ulterior motive, likely held by a higher power, in affording them this free reign.

A similar undertone of mysteriousness can be found with other characters, namely Murdock, Shinbi and Skylar. They are different in that they, especially the former two, seem to oppose this unidentified entity. Yet, it still very much exists as an undertone to their backstories, a common theme throughout this game's lore.

Answer: Zarus

It was actually specifically Zarus' killing of the King of Nyr that caused Feng Mao to lose his position in the royal court. Though Feng Mao never directly fought Zarus, and Zarus' name isn't even directly mentioned in Feng Mao's lore, Zarus' act of killing the King of Nyr is mentioned.

As a result of this, Feng Mao was essentially banished from Nyr and forced to roam Sylmara as a castaway nomad.

Answer: Feng Mao

The lore also adds that Feng Mao, upset with how arrogant Wukong eventually became, eventually sparred with him. Though the result of this sparring is never clarified, Feng Mao aimed to teach Wukong not just how to fight, but how a warrior should maintain his lifestyle, down to tempering his body and spirit. Feng Mao's work in this regard likely culminated into Wukong's Body and Spirit stances as mechanics in the game.

Answer: Heads of the undead

Kira started off hunting vampires for the Order, which simply demanded she bring their heads to them as proof of their demise. The other condition was that Kira could never ask why she was being given specific targets- she was to simply do as she was told and have that be that.

Most character backstories have some element of "do not question authority" as an ominous undertone, and this is Kira's aspect of this dynamic.

Answer: Being attached to a dying field medic

One day, a series of androids were corrupted by a cyberattack. Simultaneously, a direct invasion was launched against the Aresium Laboratory where Muriel was developed. In the invasion, a decorated field medic's life was in peril following a series of explosions from enemy dropped bombs. To solve two problems with one solution, this medic's consciousness was grafted with Muriel, to both prevent her from being hacked and, in essence, save the medic's life.

Answer: Skylar

According to lore, Phase grew up stricken with poverty. She met Skylar as a child, who essentially showed Phase how to survive a scrappy, sneaky lifestyle navigating the city of Axion Prime. One day, Skylar found herself caught in the path of a runaway train, hurtling towards her at a sudden, extreme speed. Afraid for her friend, Phase discovered her powers accidentally as she telekinetically would pull Skylar above the train, as if flying, just barely avoiding death via getting run over.

Lore additionally implies that this event is what caused Skylar to learn more about aerial combat and maneuvering, reflected directly in her gameplay.

Answer: Yurei

Yurei herself is a Koru Shinzo, and unsurprisingly has familial roots within the clan herself. As such, Yin and Yurei are at least loosely related by blood to one another. As Renna is Yurei's sister, this also applies to her as well.
