Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As I stand at the top of this tower, I see the Pearl River running swiftly through the city around me as well as many of the ten districts that call this Chinese city home. Where am I?

Answer: Guangzhou

Considering that I'm in the tallest tower a city with ten districts, through which the Pearl River runs, I must be in the uniquely-built Canton Tower in the Chinese port city of Guangzhou, the first tower to surpass Toronto's CN Tower as the tallest structure in the world.

Its pinnacle tops the tower off at an even 600m, so from the rotating observation level at the top, I can see much of this amazing major city. Acrophobics beware! This tower also contains an open air stairwell where visitors can climb the height of the building, and it's certainly a climb to master.
2. As I take the elevator to the top of this residential building, one of the world's tallest, I can see the Pacific Ocean and spots dozens of miles away. This building, Q1, is a great way to look down upon sunny Surfer's Paradise in which Australian city?

Answer: Gold Coast

Q1 is one of the Southern Hemisphere's tallest buildings and most of it is filled with apartments overlooking the Gold Coast and the Pacific beaches of Autralia's eastern shores. Perfectly positioned for the avid beach-goer, I can see why Q1 has so much appeal.

In fact, some tenants paid millions for some of the suites available in this massive structure. The observation deck, known to many as the SkyPoint, holds my best views of Surfer's Paradise, a section of Gold Coast's city, and is one of the highest observation points in the country. Q1 stands at a height of 323m to the tip of its spire.
3. As I reach the roof of one of Scandinavia's tallest buildings, I'm not sure which way to look to find Copenhagen. It takes me a while to find the Oresund Bridge, but it's there, and so is the city's oldest building, St. Peter's Church. Where am I?

Answer: Malmo

Situated near the waters of the Baltic Sea, the Turning Torso would be the name of this building, one of Europe's tallest residential towers and, at one time, the tallest building in Scandinavia. Malmo is one of Sweden's most populated cities and it is also home to the bridge connecting Sweden and Denmark.

The Turning Torso, at 190m, won a number of architecture awards upon its opening in 2006 due to its unique design in which the walls of the tower turn almost ninety degrees as they ascend. In other words, the south wall faces the west by the time it reaches the top. From the top I can look out over the Baltic or through Malmo at some of the unique structures dotting the cityscape including centuries-old cathedrals and museums.
4. As I look down over the edge of the viewing platform on this structure, I see Sports City. If I look out along the cityscape I can also see Education City and the coast of the Indian Ocean. Which city am I looking at from Aspire Tower?

Answer: Doha

Aspire Tower, while not the tallest feature in Doha's modern skyline, is one of its largest reaching a height of 300m. Found in the Doha Olympic Park, Aspire Tower functions as a city landmark, an observation platform, a restaurant, and a focal point for the 2006 Asian Games. With the continual growth of Doha as a major city in the Persian Gulf region, there were already plans to top the height of this structure set in motion by the time it was finished its construction. Towers such as these helped solidify Qatar's role as the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
5. As I stare through the windows of this structure I can see the rest of an international business center including the Naberezhnaya Tower and Imperia Tower. What is the Russian city I'm standing atop?

Answer: Moscow

The City of Capitals is not the tallest structure in Moscow, Russia's capital city, but it is one of the largest skyscrapers. In fact, City of Capitals is two different skyscrapers (one called the 'Moscow Tower' and the other called the 'St. Petersburg Tower') found in Moscow's downtown core.

The 'Moscow Tower', the taller of the two, stretches to over 300m in height. This is not Moscow's highest by a long-shot; the Ostankino Tower, which rises to 540m at the top of its spire, was only surpassed by the CN Tower as the world's tallest structure for over thirty years.

In 2010, the City of Capitals became the tallest tower in Europe. Its position in Moscow's commercial district is only a short distance away from the Red Square and the Kremlin.
6. As I ascend to the top of this tall tower I can see the Pyramids, the Sphinx, and the Nile. In fact, this tower is taller than the Great Pyramids and it's closer to the Nile. What's the name of the Egyptian city I'm looking over?

Answer: Cairo

Judging by what I see, I'm clearly at the top of Cairo Tower standing on Gezira Island in Cairo. Along with the Egyptian Opera House, this landmark is one of the most famous non-ancient sites in the city. Originally built in 1960, Cairo Tower stretches to a height of 187m, about twenty percent taller than the Great Pyramids of Giza.

While one of the country's largest towers it is not the absolute largest structure- you would have to look at some power structures down the Suez Canal for that.
7. As I look down, I see the Blue Jays playing a major league ballgame and I can see the rides on Centre Island in motion. From here I can also see First Canadian Place. What Canadian city am I in?

Answer: Toronto

For several decades, the CN Tower was the tallest building on the globe until it was passed in height by the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. At over 550m, it was built in 1976. I can either make my way to the main pod to walk on the glass floor suspended nearly half a mile above the ground or enjoy a meal in the world's highest revolving restaurant, or I can go even higher to the Sky Pod from which I can see the mists of Niagara Falls if it's a clear day.

At the CN Tower's base is the Skydome, home of the Toronto Blue Jays, and in the middle of Lake Ontario is Centre Island, one of the Toronto Islands. First Canadian Place, in the downtown core of Toronto, is home to the Bank of Montreal.
8. As I feel the wind at my back, I can see Montmartre from this tall tower, the tallest in the country. Where could I be standing to see the Ile de la Cite at a height of 273m?

Answer: Paris

While 273m is the highest floor of the Eiffel Tower, the structure actually reaches a total height of 324m. Nonetheless, the Eiffel Tower became the tallest structure in France in 1889; for forty years it was the tallest in the world! From the observation deck here, I can see many of the most famous sights in Paris including the Champs-Elysees, the Arc du Triomphe, Notre-Dame Cathedral, and others. All around the world, dozens of replicas of the Eiffel Tower have been created including the Tokyo Tower in Japan which reaches a height of 332m.

The Eiffel Tower was originally built in 1889 for the World Fair which was held in Paris. This isn't the first time a tall tower has been created as a result of the World's Fair; the Space Needle was made in Seattle in 1962, and the Skyneedle was made in Brisbane in 1988.
9. As I walk along the windows of the top floor of the Commerzbank Tower I can see a technological city below. In the distance I see planes landing at an international hub, the Main River, and Saint Bartholomew's Cathedral. Which city must I be in?

Answer: Frankfurt

In 1997, upon its completion, the Commerzbank Tower became Europe's tallest building towering over Frankfurt's modern skyline. At the top floor of the building I'm sixty-five floors up but the spire actually reaches to 300m. Originally built as the headquarters for its namesake, Commerzbank, this tower has since become an irreplaceable facet of Frankfurt's city skyline. Frankfurt's high standards in the worlds of commerce and business have resulted in the Commerzbank Tower being an important spot for the country's economy.
10. As I try to see over the mountains separating this capital city from the Caribbean, I'm unable to see the water. Instead, I can always look down through the windows of the Parque Central Complex to see Plaza Bolivar. Which city must I be in?

Answer: Caracas

Developed and completed in 1979, the Parque Central Complex became South America's tallest building upon its construction and did not get overthrown from its title for over three decades. Parque Central Complex is actually two twin towers in Caracas, Venezuela and from here I can look down upon the city's metropolitan area or out at the mountains separating the city from the sea, the Cordillera de la Costa Central. Only fifteen miles of national reserve separate this valley city from the water. Parque Central mostly contains residential space and offices though it's close to many of the city's most famous sights and museums.
