I Love When That Happens! Trivia Quiz

Sometimes I have a great idea that I can't turn into a quiz. I hate when that happens. But then I find out that there is a much better way to do so than I originally planned. I love when that happens! This quiz demonstrates both. Enjoy!

Question 1 of 10
1. Once upon a time, we could do colored Wordwise quizzes on Funtrivia. Then came along Wordwise's great dark age when HTML was no longer permitted in quizzes and so the colors had to go. (I hate when that happens!) But then photo quizzes came along and suddenly a colored clue like the one in this image is possible again. (I love when that happens!) What does it mean?

Note: For this quiz, grey is always the "neutral" color. All other colors have meanings. Also, no punctuation is needed and you may occasionally need to fill in an article ("a" or "the") where appropriate. Look at the word and letter counts to make sure you're correct!

Answer: (Three Words (3, 6, 9))
Question 2 of 10
2. Most of the classic clues like "once in a blue moon" have been done before. But then one can do more with photos than with basic HTML. This clue proves my point - what does it mean?

Answer: (Three Words (6, 4, 6))
Question 3 of 10
3. Now the warmup is over - let's add a spatial relationship to the clue. What does this image represent? (Be careful with the preposition!)

Answer: (5 Words (5, 2, 3, 6, 6). The second is not "of".)
Question 4 of 10
4. This clue might have been possible in the old format, but it does look better in full graphics anyway. What did I want to express here?

Answer: (5 Words (4, 3, 5, 3, 4))
Question 5 of 10
5. It's a cow? No, it's just another clue - what does it stand for?

Answer: (6 Words (3, 4, 2, 5, 3, 5))
Question 6 of 10
6. This one's a well-known proverb - which one?

(Please note that there is no "always" in the solution!)

Answer: (8 Words (3, 5, 2, 7, 2, 3, 5, 4))
Question 7 of 10
7. With images I'm not restricted to placing words next to each other, so how about this clue - can you figure it out?

Answer: (5 Words (4, 6, 3, 4, 3))
Question 8 of 10
8. Let's combine all techniques so far in this more difficult clue - what have I encoded here?

(Remember that you can always click on the image to get a larger and clearer version)

Answer: (6 Words (1, 6, 6, 4, 3, 4))
Question 9 of 10
9. I'm sure this clue has been done in a black and white variant before, but here's a technicolor version. Sing along and tell me its meaning!

Answer: (Four Words (9, 4, 3, 7))
Question 10 of 10
10. I both hate and love when that happens: I've just started to really get into the swing and then the ten questions are already filled (so I need to write a second quiz). Here's a last gem for you for now, with a spatial relationship most likely unseen in a Wordwise quiz before - what's its meaning?

Answer: (4 Words (3, 7, 3, 4))

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Red carpet treatment

With the word "carpet" in red, this equates to "red carpet treatment" - something that everyone enjoys when they get it because it surely does feel good to be treated as a VIP.
2. Most of the classic clues like "once in a blue moon" have been done before. But then one can do more with photos than with basic HTML. This clue proves my point - what does it mean?

Answer: Golden Gate Bridge

The sparkle of gold is often lost on the screen, but I hope you identified it to discover the famous San Francisco landmark in this puzzle. (I am just thinking of how the bridge would look if its customary orange color were to be replaced with an actual gold plating...)
3. Now the warmup is over - let's add a spatial relationship to the clue. What does this image represent? (Be careful with the preposition!)

Answer: Stars on the silver screen

From San Francisco to Hollywood - the silver screen evoking the grandeur of classical cinema can't be thought of without its stars. "On" is one of the most common meanings when a Wordwise clue places one word atop another.
(Note: "Stars OF the Silver Screen" is also a well-known variant of the phrase, but it doesn't match the clue image, so it's not quite correct in the context of the quiz.)
4. This clue might have been possible in the old format, but it does look better in full graphics anyway. What did I want to express here?

Answer: Beat him black and blue

Here, "beat him" has two colors - black and blue - so both need to be in the answer. Rendered like this, the clue almost looks as bruised as a real concussion!
5. It's a cow? No, it's just another clue - what does it stand for?

Answer: Put down in black and white

Sometimes you just need to put things in writing to make sure an agreement is being adhered to - or, using the idiom, put them down in black and white.
6. This one's a well-known proverb - which one? (Please note that there is no "always" in the solution!)

Answer: The grass is greener on the other side

I'm sure almost everyone knows this saying that can also enrage language purists who rightfully state that color adjectives should not be used in comparative or superlative forms. But then, "The grass on the other side is of a more saturated shade of green" just doesn't have the same ring.
7. With images I'm not restricted to placing words next to each other, so how about this clue - can you figure it out?

Answer: Sail across the blue sea

The placing of the letters here does not stand for "over" (which would be another case where one word should be on top of the other), but literally puts the "sail" across the "sea". Including the color word, you arrive at the solution.
8. Let's combine all techniques so far in this more difficult clue - what have I encoded here? (Remember that you can always click on the image to get a larger and clearer version)

Answer: A yellow streak down his back

Another play on the "down" theme, this arrangement of letters speaks of cowardice in the most metaphorical way possible.
9. I'm sure this clue has been done in a black and white variant before, but here's a technicolor version. Sing along and tell me its meaning!

Answer: Somewhere over the rainbow

One of the things to keep in mind during a Wordwise play is that the visual qualifiers can work either before or after the word they modify. Both "count down" and "down in flames" can be expressed with a simple vertical - here, the rainbow colors lead to the all-time favorite song from "The Wizard of Oz".
10. I both hate and love when that happens: I've just started to really get into the swing and then the ten questions are already filled (so I need to write a second quiz). Here's a last gem for you for now, with a spatial relationship most likely unseen in a Wordwise quiz before - what's its meaning?

Answer: Cut through red tape

The transparent "tape" literally places "cut" to be seen through the red letters. Now that we have a way to safely break the unfortunate but necessary "only black and white" rule (and a few others), I expect we might soon see more photo Wordwise - I have a few more ideas lying around for this (and I love when that happens!)
