Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I married four women eight times or is that eight women four times. I can never quite remember."

Answer: Stan Laurel

It's no wonder Arthur Stanley Jefferson, otherwise known as Stan Laurel, the skinny half of 'Laurel and Hardy', was confused. He only had four wives, but managed to marry them a total of eight times. He tied the knot with his second wife, Virginia Ruth Rogers, in 1934 and again the following year, as his divorce from his first wife hadn't come through in time for the earlier ceremony.

His third wife was Russian and he married her three times; the first time he thought it may not have been legal, so did it again; then a third time in the Russian Orthodox Church .. just to make sure! In the space of a couple of years he was back with wife number two again, whom he wed once more, and this time that lasted five years. Marriage to Ida Kitaeva Raphael quickly followed, to whom he was still married when he died in 1965, almost twenty years later. I guess he got the hang of it in the end!
2. "I never speak of my ex-husbands, except under hypnosis."

Answer: Joan Collins

Probably a wise move, as Joan had a famously bitter split from her fourth husband, Peter Holm. Her fifth husband, Percy Gibson, is the same age as her son by her second husband, actor Anthony Newley.
3. "Mother told me a couple of years ago 'Sweetheart, settle down and marry a rich man.' I said 'Mom, I am a rich man.'"

Answer: Cher

Possibly still best remembered, at least to those 'of a certain age', as half of the 1960s duo Sonny and Cher with her first husband Sonny Bono, Cher has an optimistic view of love .. "If grass can grow through cement, love can find you at every time in your life."
4. "In Hollywood, marriage is a success if it outlives milk."

Answer: Rita Rudner

Rita Rudner, winner of the 1990 Female Stand-Up Comedy Award and regular television comedienne, has her own forthright views on love and marriage .. "Men would like monogamy better if it sounded less like monotony."
5. "There's only one way to have a happy marriage and as soon as I learn what it is I'll get married again."

Answer: Clint Eastwood

It looks like he finally figured it out! Following his divorce from his first wife, Maggie Johnson, in 1978 after 25 years of marriage, Clint enjoyed nearly 20 years of the single life. During this time he fathered four children by three different women; although he never had a child with Sondra Locke, with whom he lived for 11 of those years.

In 1996 Clint married his second wife, Dina Ruiz.
6. "I planned on having one husband and seven children, but it turned out the other way around."

Answer: Lana Turner

Lana's first husband was the much-married bandleader Artie Shaw, of whom she said "Of course I married Artie Shaw. Everybody married Artie Shaw". In fact Artie only married eight times, saying "You have no idea of the women I didn't marry." Lana's other six husbands ranged from "Tarzan" actor Lex Barker to a rancher and a hypnotist.

She did have just the one child, a daughter, Cheryl, from her second marriage to businessman, Stephen Crane.
7. "I wouldn't be caught dead married to a woman old enough to be my wife."

Answer: Tony Curtis

True to his word, Tony married his fifth wife, Jill Vanden Berg, in 1998. He was 74, his wife was just 29 years old.
8. "I'm living with a girl but we're not married. It's kinda like leasing with an option to buy."

Answer: Jack Nicholson

Jack has also been quoted as saying "You only lie to two people in your life: your girlfriend and the police," which may go some way to explaining why he hasn't tied the knot with quite the same regularity as many of his peers. Some of his more notable relationships, since his brief marriage in the 1960s, have been with Anjelica Huston, Rebecca Broussard (with whom he had two children) and Lara Flynn Boyle.
9. "I've married a few people I shouldn't have, but haven't we all?"

Answer: Mamie Van Doren

The ultimate 1960s sex symbol Mamie, born Joan Lucille Olander, modelled herself on the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield and, although the lesser known of the three, was still posing for "pin-up" calendars in 2001.
10. "Love conquers all things - except poverty and toothache."

Answer: Mae West

No quiz on Hollywood witticisms would be complete without a quote from Mae West. Mae made her name on Broadway starring in comedies, usually written by herself, which had a frank approach to sexual matters. She was even imprisoned for a short while following the release of "Sex" in 1926 due to its "alleged obscenity".
