Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nicknamed "The River City," which river is it that runs through downtown Jacksonville and bisects the city?

Answer: St. Johns

Over 300 miles long, Florida's longest river is the St. Johns. It originates south of Melbourne and flows north, at times with a width of three miles, before it empties into the Atlantic Ocean in Jacksonville. At certain times of the year, it is not unusual to see manatees and dolphins in the river downtown.
2. Where is Jacksonville located within the very large state of Florida?

Answer: Just 25 miles south of the Georgia border on the Atlantic side

Called a "best kept secret" by the Jacksonville Beaches website, the beach communities of Mayport, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach in Duval County and Ponte Vedra Beach in St. Johns County are less densely populated than many of Florida's better-known beach communities.

This makes them a haven for surfers, beach volleyball players, walkers, joggers, fishers, bird watchers, and those who just want to soak up some rays or play in the surf.
3. Which of these statements is true?

Answer: In terms of land area, Jacksonville is the largest city in the lower 48 states

In 1968 the City of Jacksonville expanded and includes almost the whole of Duval County within its limits. This equals a total area of 874.3 square miles, which converts to approximately 2,264 square kilometers.
4. A factory for which product was opened on the river in downtown Jacksonville in 1910 and has contributed towards a distinctive smell ever since?

Answer: Maxwell House Coffee

Maxwell House Coffee was the best-selling coffee in the U.S. until Folgers surpassed it in the late 1980s. In 2009, the production facility on the east end of downtown Jacksonville on the north bank of the St. Johns River is one of only two production facilities for Maxwell House. The other is located in San Leandro, California.
5. What was the Jacksonville Landing?

Answer: A nine-acre shopping and dining complex downtown

With its distinctive semi-circular construction and orange roof, the Landing opened in 1987. It housed many restaurants and 65 stores on the north bank of the river downtown. It was closed in 2019.
6. The Epping Forest Yacht Club is the former estate of an East Coast industrialist. Which philanthropist relocated to Jacksonville in 1926 and lived out his final years there with his third wife Jessie?

Answer: Alfred I. duPont

Gate Petroleum Company was founded as a single gas station by Herb Peyton in 1960 and developed into one of northeast Florida's largest corporations through expansion into other sectors. Gate bought duPont's former 58-acre estate on the east bank of the St. Johns River in 1984.

The mansion, which is listed in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, and nearby grounds were restored and transformed into the Yacht Club, while the outlying property was converted into condominiums and million-dollar homes.
7. A striking cable-supported bridge connects the majority of Jacksonville with the northernmost part that includes the airport, the zoo, and the Anheuser-Busch brewery. Officially called the Napoleon Bonaparte Broward Bridge, what is its more commonly used name?

Answer: The Dames Point Bridge

From the time the two-mile long Dames Point Bridge was completed in 1989 until the Sidney Lanier Bridge in Brunswick, Georgia opened in 2003, the Dames Point was the only harp-stay arranged bridge (which means the cables are arranged parallel to one another) in the U.S.

Besides being a beautiful site gracing the St. Johns River and welcoming visitors into the city, the bridge is unique in that no workers were killed during its construction.
8. Which of the following modern rock bands is NOT from Jacksonville?

Answer: System of a Down

Hailing from Jacksonville, Shinedown has sold over six million albums with singles such as "Save Me," "Devour," and "Second Chance." Pop punk band Yellowcard has had gold and double platinum albums with hits like "Lights and Sounds" and "Only One". Nu metal band Limp Bizkit has sold over 50 million albums, with their "Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water" album going six times Multi-Platinum.

In addition, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus hails from Middleburg, a town about thirty miles southwest of downtown Jacksonville and considered part of the Greater Jacksonville Metropolitan Area. System of a Down, however, formed in Glendale, California.
9. Which statement is true about University of Florida Gator football player Tim Tebow?

Answer: He was the first sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy

Prior to playing for the Gators, Tim Tebow played high school football for Nease High School in Ponte Vedra Beach. When he joined the Gators as a freshman in 2006, the team won the national championship, but that was their first win since 1996. Tebow's record-breaking 2007 season earned him the Davey O'Brien award, the Maxwell Award, and the James E. Sullivan Award--in addition to his most notable achievement as the first sophomore to win the Heisman.

He did not win the Heisman again in 2008, however.

Instead, it went to Sam Bradford of Oklahoma. Archie Griffin of the Ohio State Buckeyes was the first player to win the Heisman twice, in his junior and senior years, which were 1974 and 1975.
10. Which U.S. golf championship is held in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida?

Answer: The Players Championship (TPC)

TPC is commonly referred to as the "fifth" major. Officially, the four biggest golf tournaments are the Masters, held at Augusta National in Georgia, the Open, played on a UK links course, and the U.S. Open and PGA Championship, which are both held in the U.S. but at various locations.

Although not officially a major, TPC awards the highest monetary prize. Now called the Players Championship, the original name for this tournament was the Tournament Players Championship. Originally held in Marietta, Georgia, in 1974 before moving to Fort Worth, Texas, and then on to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, the TPC came to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, in 1977. From then until 1981, it was held on the Oceanside Course at Sawgrass Country Club.

In 1982 it moved to the Stadium Course at Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass (TPC at Sawgrass).
