Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Italian city is famous for a bell tower which doesn't stand up straight?

Answer: Pisa

Pisa is a city in western Tuscany which stands on the banks of the Arno River. It is synonymous with its leaning tower, whose construction took nearly 200 years, between 1178 and 1372. Unstable foundations meant it has always leant to one side, with stabilization work taking place in the late 20th century to ensure that tourists can still admire it for years to come.
2. What is the name of the Russian city that is generally regarded as the easternmost in the whole of Europe?

Answer: Perm

Perm is located on the banks of the Kama River to the west of the Ural Mountains, which divide Europe from Asia. It is the administrative centre of Perm Krai, which is part of the Volga Federal District. The city is a major junction on the Trans-Siberian Railway, and a major industrial and cultural centre.
3. What is the name of the second-largest city in Portugal?

Answer: Porto

Porto sits on the banks of the estuary of the Douro River, close to where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. With a population (in 2021) in its greater metropolitan area of around 1.7 million, it is by far the second-largest city in Portugal, behind the capital city of Lisbon. The city is synonymous with Port wine, which is produced from grapes grown in the surrounding vineyards.
4. Which one of these Spanish cities is located on an island?

Answer: Palma

Palma is the largest city and capital of Majorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. Founded by the Romans in 124BC, the city has been conquered by both Muslims and Christians through the centuries. It took off as a major tourist destination after World War 2, when commercial air travel made Majorca easily accessible to visitors from around Europe.
5. Which one of these cities, all of which were once part of the former Yugoslavia, is the capital city of Montenegro?

Answer: Podgorica

Pristina is the capital city of Kosovo, whilst Pozega and Pula are both cities in Croatia. Podgorica is the capital city of Montenegro, and was known as Titograd between 1946 and 1992. It lies at the confluence of the Ribnica and Moraca rivers and is the country's main industrial and financial centre.
6. The Charles Bridge is a famous landmark in which central European city?

Answer: Prague

Prague is the capital city of Czechia, and was the capital of the former Czechoslovakia until 1993. The city lies on the banks of the Vltava River, the most famous crossing of which is the Charles Bridge, construction of which was competed in 1402. Wenceslas Square, in the centre of the city, is named after the country's patron saint, and is the venue for public celebrations and demonstrations.
7. Which one of these rivers is the longest in Italy?

Answer: Po

The Po River rises in the Alps near the border with France, and flows for just over 400 miles in a generally eastwards direction. Its mouth is near the town of Adria on the Adriatic Sea. Large cities along its banks include Turin, Ferrara and Piacenza.
8. Which one of these eastern European cities has had a long association with oil production?

Answer: Ploiesti

Ploiesti is a city in Romania which began extracting oil in the mid 19th century. The city became a target for the Central Powers during World War 1 and then by the Nazis during World War 2. The communist government nationalised the oil industry after the latter war, and production continued there into the 21st century.
9. The Luxembourg Palace is a famous building in which French city?

Answer: Paris

Paris is the capital and largest city of France, and has enough famous buildings to fill a quiz of its own. The Luxembourg Palace was built in the 17th century as a home for the mother of King Louis XIII (she acted as his regent at the time) and is named after a Duke, Francois de Luxembourg.

After the French Revolution, it became a public building, and, since 1958, the home of the French Senate.
10. What is the name of the capital and largest city of Sicily?

Answer: Palermo

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the 20 regions of Italy. Palermo is located on the north west coast of the island and is a major economic and tourist centre.
