Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It's my first day in Yerevan and I am going to visit the huge, beautiful cathedral which is one of the town's landmarks and the largest Armenian church in the world. What is its name?

Answer: Saint Gregory the Illuminator

Towering 180 ft above ground and covering a surface of some 12540 sq ft, it is a huge orange-colored complex of arches, towers and two chapels with exquisite stained-glass windows. The Cathedral of Christ the Savior is in Moscow. Neither of the other two are cathedrals.
2. What imposing natural sight is visible from Yerevan, especially on clear days?

Answer: Mount Ararat

Mount Ararat is actually in Turkey, just by the border. It is Turkey's highest point (5,137 m, 16,854 ft). Noah's Ark is said to have ended up on its summit after the great flood. Mount Erebus is in Antarctica, while Mount Ushba and Mount Shkhara are both in Georgia.
3. Yerevan is built on the shores of which river?

Answer: The Hrazdan River

The Hrazdan starts at Lake Sevan located in Eastern Armenia. The other three rivers have their sources in Turkey and do not go through Yerevan.
4. Yerevan has been twinned with a number of cities throughout the world; two of them are in the USA. One is Cambridge, Massachusetts. Which is the other one?

Answer: Los Angeles (California)

Yerevan was twinned with Cambridge in 1987 and Los Angeles in 2007. Twinning consists in establishing relations between two towns of different countries (or sometimes within one same country). These relations are characterized essentially by sociocultural exchanges.
5. I have decided to see more of Armenia, so I leave Yerevan. I first visit the 9th century Hayravank Monastery before arriving at Harsnaqar Beach. Since it is summertime I can go for swim, yippee! Where am I?

Answer: On the northwestern shore of Lake Sevan

Lake Sevan is the largest lake in Armenia and has many beaches along its shoreline. Harsnaqar Beach is famous for its very nice hotels and many amenities including tennis courts. The lake allows for many activities, too, like fishing, surfing, sunbathing, to name a few. Lake Van is in Turkey and Lake Urmia in north eastern Iran.

As for the Black Sea, you have to first go to Georgia, or Turkey...or Russia.
6. Which of the following best describes the topography of Armenia?

Answer: Hills and Mountains

The whole country is 1,300 ft above sea level, and is mainly mountainous with a few forests. Plains are rare. The highest mountain is Mt Aragats at 13,419 ft (not to be confused with Mt Ararat).
7. What kind of climate would you expect to have in the winter in Armenia?

Answer: Cold with snow

It's a mountainous region with a continental climate. It is generally cold with plenty of snow during the winter, much to the delight of winter sports fans who thus have an opportunity to go skiing.
8. Time to think about food! So I find a nice restaurant in Yerevan. A waiter greets me with these words: "Barev dzez, bari yereko". What does it mean?

Answer: Hello, good evening.

"Barev dzez" is formal for "Hello", while "bari yereko" means "good evening". "How are you?" is "Inchpes ek?", and "pleased to meet you" would be "shat hatcheli e". "Where are you from?" is "Vorteghits ek?"...Quite an interesting language, isn't it?
9. In the nice restaurant in Yerevan, after finishing a delicious meal of cured beef, spicy sausages, garlic chicken and assorted vegetables stuffed with rice, guess what: I have to pay the check! What local currency do I use?

Answer: The Dram

The Dram is the local currency. The name is close to that of another currency, the Dirham, used in several Arab States. The Lari is the unit of currency in Georgia. The Somoni is used in Tajikistan.
10. From Yerevan I travel east to see the Caspian Sea (pardon the pun) and cross the border into which country?

Answer: Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan is on western shore of the Caspian Sea and has a western border with Armenia (Azerbaijan is in between Armenia and the Caspian Sea). Georgia also borders Armenia, but is on the Black Sea to the northwest. The other two are farther east and totally landlocked.
