Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "Always in a hurry, I never stop to worry Don't see the time flashing by Honey, got no money"

Answer: "I'm all sixes and sevens and nines"

The rousing "Tumbling Dice" from 1972's "Exile On Main Street." Linda Ronstadt also sang a great version of this later in the 1970s.
2. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "Yeah, you've got satin shoes Yeah, you've got plastic boots You've all got cocaine eyes"

Answer: "Yeah, you've got speed freak jive"

"Can't You Hear Me Knocking" from 1971's "Sticky Fingers." It was probably Mick Taylor's guitar and Bobby Keys' saxophone, rather than lyrics like this, that made the song memorable!
3. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "I come to you, so silent in the night So stealthy, so animal quiet I'll be your savior, steadfast and true"

Answer: "I'll come to your emotional rescue"

Title song from 1980's "Emotional Rescue," for my money the first - and unfortunately not the last - truly expendable record the band made.
4. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "I need a shot of salvation, baby, once in a while"

Answer: "Hear the whistle blowing, hear it for a thousand miles"

"All Down the Line" from "Exile on Main Street," with its wailing guitar and driving lyrics, has to be on my very short list of all-time Stones favorites. I think I'd pay to go to a concert and watch them play it over and over for 90 minutes.
5. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "Honey, honey, call me on the telephone I know you're moving out to Hollywood with your can of tasty foam All those beat up friends of mine got to get you in their books"

Answer: "And lead guitars and movie stars get their toe beneath your hook"

"Star Star" from 1973's "Goat's Head Soup." It's unlikely that, before or since, a mainstream recording artist on a mainstream release, ever put out a raunchier song. And the above is one of the cleaner verses!
6. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "All your sickness, I can suck it up Throw it all at me, I can shrug it off There's one thing, baby, I don't understand"

Answer: "You keep on telling me I ain't your kind of man"

"Beast of Burden" from 1978's "Some Girls." When the Stones were to appear in China for the first time in 2003 - the appearance was later cancelled because of the SARS outbreak - the Chinese government ordered them to not play the song because of some unexplained issues they had with the lyrics.
7. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "I was a hooker losing her looks I was a writer, can't write another book I was all dried up, dying to get wet"

Answer: "I was a tycoon drowning in debt"

"You Got Me Rocking" from 1994's "Voodoo Lounge." It's (I think) one of the few songs the Stones have done since 1985 that's worth listening to.
8. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "Always took candy from strangers Didn't want to get me no trade Never wanted to be like papa"

Answer: "Working for the boss every night and day"

Keith's epic "Happy" from "Exile On Main Street."

For some reason, I remember the lyric being "working for the MAN every night and day," but every place I checked has "boss."

Whatever the wording, congratulations Keith, looks like you got your wish.
9. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "Rats on the sell-out Who gonna testify You know my habits way ahead of time"

Answer: "Listening to me on your satellite"

The just-a-wee-bit-paranoid "Fingerprint File," from 1974's "It's Only Rock 'n Roll."
10. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "I've got to fly today on down to Baton Rouge My nerves are shot already, the road ain't all that smooth Across in Texas is the rose of San Antone"

Answer: "I keep on feeling that gnawing in my bones"

"Memory Motel" from 1975's "Black and Blue." A beautiful song later performed by the Dave Matthews Band in concert, "Memory Motel" is about a motel by that name in Montauk, Long Island.
11. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "This coming and going is driving me nuts This to-ing and fro-ing is hurting my guts So get off the fence now, you're creasing your butt"

Answer: "Life is a party, let's get out and strut"

1989's "Mixed Emotions," from "Steel Wheels."

During the mid-1980s, the Stones feuded with each other and worked on solo projects. Keith recorded a song, "You Don't Move Me," that was supposedly a shot at Mick (supposedly? read those lyrics yourself and see what you think...).

According to some, this song was Mick's rejoinder to Keith ("you're not the only one with mixed emotions"). Keith is alleged to have referred to it as "Mick's Emotions."
12. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "Take a thousand dollars, go have some fun"

Answer: "Put it all on at a hundred to one"

"Hang Fire" off of 1980's "Tattoo You," a dig at the welfare state of Europe in general and their homeland of England in particular.
13. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "Cause my sweet girl was once his wife And he had papers that the judge had signed The wind blew hard, it was a stormy night"

Answer: "He shot me once but I shot him twice"

The rocking "Hand of Fate" from "Black and Blue." One of the most underrated rockers the group ever did, the track features a guitarist named Wayne Perkins, who the Stones almost hired after Mick Taylor left the band. Ron Wood got the full-time guitarist job, but Perkins lets it fly here!
14. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "The police in New York City They chased a boy right through the park And in a case of mistaken identity"

Answer: "They put a bullet through his heart"

"Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)" from "Goat's Head Soup."

A bouncy song with pretty depressing lyrics, maybe "Heartbreaker's" greatest claim to fame is that many people mistake the lyric "Heartbreaker, with your .44" to be "Heartbreaker, with your bowling ball." The notion of a police officer chasing someone through the park while wielding a bowling ball just cracks me up.
15. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "And there ain't nothing like a perfect mate And I ain't looking for no wedding cake But I been talking about it much too long"

Answer: "I think I better sing just one more song"

"If You Can't Rock Me" from "It's Only Rock 'n Roll." It's a good song that worked wonderfully in their 1975-76 tour segueing into "Get Off of My Cloud." Hear it on their 1977 "Love You Live" set.
16. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "Watch my taillights fading, there ain't a dry eye in the house They're laughing and singing"

Answer: "Well they're dancing and drinking as I left town"

"Before They Make Me Run," from "Some Girls."

This was a hugely poignant song when it came out, as Keith faced a heroin trafficking charge in Canada that could have put him in prison for life. Many thought that this was his swan song to performing. In the end, a blind fan who Keith had befriended vouched for him, and he was sentenced to perform a benefit concert for a blind charity, sparing himself any jail time.

Ironically, on their 1978 US tour, they performed all of "Some Girls" except for the title song and this one. The "Keith song" for the tour that year was "Happy."
17. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "Thank you for your wine, California Thank you for your sweet and bitter fruit Yes, I've got the desert in my toenail"

Answer: "And I hid the speed inside my shoe"

"Exile on Main Street"'s "Sweet Virginia," probably the catchiest singalong they ever recorded.
18. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "Some called me garbage When I was sleeping on the street I never roll and I never cheat I'm filling a need I'm plugging a hole"

Answer: "My mama's so glad I ain't on the dole"

"When the Whip Comes Down" from "Some Girls," a record with numerous songs about the seamier side of the streets of New York.
19. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "Don't need a whore, I don't need no booze Don't need a virgin priest But I need someone I can cry to I need someone to protect"

Answer: "I'm not waiting on a lady, I'm just waiting on a friend"

The beautiful "Waiting On a Friend" from "Tattoo You."

This was first recorded, without lyrics, in 1972. The Stones later added the lyrics - essentially describing their trust and friendship for each other - and a marvelous sax solo, in 1981 before releasing it.
20. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "If I could stick a knife in my heart Suicide right onstage Would it be enough for your teenage lust?"

Answer: "Would it help to ease the pain?"

Title track of "It's Only Rock 'n Roll" partially inspired by David Bowie's song "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide."
21. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "All the young men, they've been rounded up And sent to camps back in the jungle And people whisper, people double-talk"

Answer: "Once-proud fathers act so humble"

"Undercover of the Night" from 1983's "Undercover." The song, about drug trafficking and violence in Central America, had a video that was so violent it was banned by the BBC and many other networks.
22. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "Chinese girls are so gentle They're really such a tease You never know quite what they're cooking"

Answer: "Inside those silky sleeves"

The spectacularly politically incorrect title song to "Some Girls."
23. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "The score's even but the dealer's squealing"

Answer: "The pool's in but the patio ain't dry"

"Little T&A," Keith's contribution to "Tattoo You." No, not even close to a rhyme, but it's Keith... give the guy a break!
24. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "The sunshine bores the daylights out of me"

Answer: "Chasing shadows, moonlight mystery"

"Rocks Off" from "Exile On Main Street." The song's lyrics, often sexually explicit, are difficult to understand because Mick slurs the words.
25. What line follows these Rolling Stones lyrics: "I bet your mama was a tent show queen And all her boyfriends were sweet sixteen I'm no school boy but I know what I like"

Answer: "You should have heard me just around midnight"

"Brown Sugar," the band's 1971 single from "Sticky Fingers." It's been interpreted to be a song about an interracial affair, a tribute to a form of heroin, and probably a few other things too.
