Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I wanted a punk classic at the party but the DJ got mixed up. Which national anthem was also the name of an anti-establishment single by the Sex Pistols?

Answer: God Save the Queen

"God Save the Queen" became the UK's national anthem in 1745. It's also used in some countries that have been influenced by the British Empire at some point in history. Queen (the band, not the monarch) recorded an instrumental version that was included on their album "A Night at the Opera".

The Sex Pistols didn't cover the national anthem; they wrote a new song with new lyrics and a different tune. It was released in 1977 during Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee. The anti-monarchy lyrics were controversial at the time and the BBC refused to play it.
2. Irene Cara performed "Fame" for the film of the same name, but that was not the song I had in mind. Who else released a song called "Fame"?

Answer: David Bowie

David Bowie's "Fame" was released in 1975. It was co-written and performed by Bowie, Carlos Alomar, and John Lennon. Since its first release, it has been covered by multiple artists and has been used in films and television shows. The "Fame" song in the film of the same name is not the Bowie song, however.
3. In 2007, Welsh rock band Funeral for a Friend released a single with the same title as a song by pop artist Kelly Clarkson. What was the title of the song?

Answer: Walk Away

"Walk Away" was the second single to be released from Funeral For a Friend's concept album, "Tales Don't Tell Themselves". It's an incredibly emotional song about trying to move on after a family member has gone missing. Not really party material I suppose. Kelly Clarkson's "Walk Away" was released in 2006 from the album "Breakaway".
4. It's always fun when your favourite band comes on at a party. My favourite band covered Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row" for the film "Watchmen". What is my favourite band?

Answer: My Chemical Romance

Unfortunately it wasn't the My Chemical Romance version that the DJ played. Never mind; Bob Dylan's original is still pretty fantastic! Bob Dylan's original track, which features on the album "Highway 61 Revisited", was over eleven minutes long. The My Chemical Romance version was shorter, faster, and punkier. My Chemical Romance singer, Gerard Way, was a fan of both Bob Dylan and the "Watchmen" graphic novel.

Their version of the song was released in 2009, over 40 years after the original.
5. I asked the DJ to play "One". I wanted Metallica's 1989 single, but instead, the DJ played a track that was released in 2014. Whose "One" did the DJ play?

Answer: Ed Sheeran

"One" was released from Ed Sheeran's second album "x". It was the final and farewell song that he wrote about his former relationship, which was the focus of his first album, "+". The song was minimalist in its sound: it comprised of just a softly-strummed guitar and Sheeran's voice. Metallica's "One", from the 1988 album "...And Justice for All", had a very different subject and tone.

It was an anti-war song about a WWI soldier who was severely wounded.
6. I really like The Clash's 1979 version of "I Fought the Law", but that wasn't the version the DJ put on. What year did The Crickets first release "I fought the Law"?

Answer: 1960

"I Fought the Law" was written and released as a B-side to the single "A Sweet Love" by The Crickets in 1960. While the original was not played on air, a 1965 cover by the Bobby Fuller Four increased the song's popularity. The Clash's punk cover of "I Fought the Law" was released in 1979, and there have been many other versions since then, including one by Hank Williams Jr., who released a country version of the song.
7. Punk band, Rise Against, released a single in 2008 that shared a name with a completely different song by hip-hop artist, Iggy Azalea. What was the name of the song?

Answer: Savior

Iggy Azalea made her name as a rapper in 2011. Her song "Savior" featured vocals by Quavo and was released in 2018 as a non-album single. Rise Against's "Savior" was on their 2008 album "Appeal to Reason". Many of the band's songs had a social or political theme, but "Savior" was different.

The lyrics were about relationships and forgiveness. I really wanted Rise Against at the party - it's a great song for a mosh pit!
8. I asked the DJ to play "Kings and Queens" and this time I specified I wanted the rock version. That just confused the DJ because two rock bands have a single with the same title. Which two bands had a song called "Kings and Queens"?

Answer: Aerosmith and Thirty Seconds to Mars

Although they have the same name, the two songs are musically and lyrically different. In 1978, Aerosmith released "Kings and Queens". According to singer and songwriter, Steven Tyler, the lyrics were "about how many people died from holy wars because of their beliefs or non-beliefs." "Kings and Queens" was the lead single on Thirty Seconds to Mars' 2009 album "This is War".

In contrast to the Aerosmith song, it was incredibly positive and uplifting.
9. In 2011, Avenged Sevenfold released a tribute to their drummer who died in 2009. It had the same title as a song by DJs Martin Garrix and David Guetta. Which song did I request?

Answer: So Far Away

Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan died of a drug overdose in 2009. Avenged Sevenfold's 2011 album, "Nightmare", featured a song that was dedicated to the band's former drummer. It was released as a single in April that year. The Martin Garrix and David Guetta single "So Far Away" was released in 2017 and was about a relationship coming to an end. Both songs have a melancholy feel and are probably not appropriate party songs. No wonder the DJ gave me an odd look when I suggested the track...
10. The DJ wanted to get everyone on the dance floor, so his eyes lit up when I asked for "Holiday". He played Madonna's 1983 dance hit, but that wasn't the song I had in mind. Which pop punk band also had a song called "Holiday"?

Answer: Green Day

"Holiday" was one of Madonna's earliest hits due to its catchiness and positive mood. Madonna's record label, Warner Bros, hadn't intended "Holiday" to be released as a single at first and the fact that it became so popular took them by surprise. Green Day's "Holiday" was also released by Warner Bros.

The song was on 2005's "American Idiot" and was the third single to be released from the album.
