The band got its name from skit contained in the movie "Elephant Parts" by former Monkee Michael Nesmith.

The band released their self-titled EP "The Tragically Hip" in 1987. "Up to Here" was released in 1989.

Bill Barilko scored the Stanley Cup winning goal in overtime in 1951 for the Leafs. Later that summer, he perished in a plane crash on a fishing trip to Northern Ontario. His remains were not found until early 1962, ironically the next year the Leafs won the Cup.

This song is often said to be based on the raid on Dieppe, which took place on August 19, 1942. Of the 6,100 personnel in the attack, 5,000 were Canadian. It is believed that almost 4,000 of the Canadian soldiers lost their lives that day. If it was not for Dieppe, D-Day may never have happened in 1944.

It has also been said to be based on the sinking of the German battleship, the "Bismarck".
