Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the original guitarist for Yes?

Answer: Peter Banks

Peter Banks played with Yes on their first two albums, and was replaced by Steve Howe for the classic "The Yes Album." South-African guitar whiz Rabin joined the band for 90215. Hackett was guitarist with Genesis.
2. Who was the original keyboards player for Yes?

Answer: Tony Kaye

Tony Kaye left after "The Yes Album," supposedly because Jon Anderson was unhappy with his keyboard work and wanted to replace him with Wakeman. If true, it's odd that many recent versions of Yes have included Tony Kaye! Moraz played keyboards with Yes on one album, "Relayer." Downes of the Buggles played keys and sang on "Drama."
3. What musician is pictured on the cover of Yes' second album, "Time And A Word," although he didn't play a note on it?

Answer: Steve Howe

Although Howe didn't record with the band until "The Yes Album,"
original guitarist Peter Banks quit shortly after recording
"Time And A Word" and was unavailable for the photo sessions
for the cover - so there's Steve Howe, looking very uncomfortable!
4. What band member is the only one who appears on ALL Yes albums?

Answer: Chris Squire

Bruford was replaced by White on drums during the live shows that became the Yesshows disc, while Anderson appears on all Yes albums except "Drama," where vocals were done by the former-Buggles team of Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes.
5. What book inspired the four "movements" on Tales From Topographic Oceans?

Answer: Autobiography of a Yogi

In the liner notes to the album, Jon Anderson describes being "caught up" in a footnote of this book, and working with Steve Howe on four musical movements based on the four principles in the footnote.
6. What instrument, which is usually associated with country music, did guitarist Steve Howe introduce into progressive-rock?

Answer: pedal-steel guitar

Howe used a pedal-steel to create beautiful, organ-like swells and high-pitched wails. For a few examples, listen to "And You And I" or "Going For The One."
7. Yes has covered songs by all these artists EXCEPT:

Answer: The Kinks

Yes covered the Beatles ("Every Little Thing") and The Byrds (Crosby/McGuinn's "I See You") on their eponymous first album. They've also covered the Beatles "I'm Down" in a live setting. They covered Paul Simon's "America" and it was released as part of a sampler from their (then) record company, Atlantic, called "The Age Of Atlantic" (which, at the time, was also the only place you could get Led Zeppelin's "Hey Hey What Can I Do"). America was finally
included on a few of the Yes hits collections, like "Yesyears," "Yesstory," and "Best of Yes."
One of my favorite Steve Howe performances on this great cover version! As far as I know, they've never covered The Kinks, though.
8. Yes' only number-one hit in America was "Roundabout."

Answer: False

"Roundabout" from "Fragile" reached number 13 in 1972, while "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" from "90215" gave Yes their first (and only) number 1 hit, in 1983.
9. Yes recorded and toured under another name that sounded like a law firm, since one member was not involved with the band at the time and they couldn't obtain the rights to the Yes name. What was this Yes "off-shoot" called?

Answer: Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe

Apparently Squire retained the rights to the YES name, or at least was able to prevent these guys from using it. Had they been able to record under the YES name, this would have made my question number 4 wrong! FYI, "stick-man" Tony Levin took the bass chores for ABWH,
and has toured with them, and YES, a few times.
10. After Peter Banks and Tony Kaye left Yes, what similar-sounding progressive rock band did they form, which was known for their risque album covers?

Answer: Flash

Vocalist Colin Carter sounded like a poor-man's Jon Anderson, and "Children of the Universe" and "Small Beginnings" are pretty good songs that wouldn't have sounded out-of-place on Yes' first album. The band's album covers included "flashes" of women that were suggestive for the time but now would probably be considered fairly tame. Check out the nice panties on their eponymous second album.
