Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies." Who said this?

Answer: Groucho Marx

Good old Groucho! Every so often he said something profound, rather than, "Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read." or, "Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water. And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like apple sauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does ..."
Groucho Marx was known for his quick wit, and as the leader of the Marx Brothers stage routines and films. He did most of the organizing, and was the one most interested in entertainment.
2. "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans" is attributed to whom?

Answer: John Lennon

"Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us, and the world will be as one."
The multi-talented John Lennon and optimist for world peace had his life cut brutally short by a madman in 1980 at the age of 40.
John not only spoke out for peace, he became involved in highly visible acts and benefits toward peace, such as the week long 'bed in' with Yoko Ono. At the time it happened, he thought that it had no real effect, but the idea and the movement spread. He seemed to adhere to the belief that you cannot change the world, but you can change your part of it which leads to others carrying on the idea and actions. And it is those people and their actions who do change the world for better or worse.
3. "Landlords, like all other men, love to reap where they never sowed." Who made this statement?

Answer: Karl Marx

Marx was probably paraphrasing Adam Smith, who wrote, "The landlords, like all other men, love to reap where they never sowed, and demand a rent even for the natural produce of the earth."
Perhaps we remember Marx better for "The worker of the world has nothing to lose but his chains. Workers of the world, unite!"
Karl Marx (1818-1883) was born in Germany and became a socialist philosopher, working with Engels on new theories partially based on Hegel's philosophy. Marx' view came down to economic forces essentially controlling everything. In 1864 he was instrumental in creating the First International Society of European Socialists.
4. "I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it." Who said it?

Answer: Groucho Marx

Of course, he also said, "The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made" and "I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book."
Groucho's original name was Julius, but he and his four brothers used two-syllable stage names ending in -o: Harpo, Chico, Gummo and Zeppo.
5. "The writer may very well serve a movement of history as its mouthpiece, but he cannot, of course, create it" is attributed to whom?

Answer: Karl Marx

He also said, "While the miser is merely a capitalist gone mad, the capitalist is a rational miser."
"We should not say that one man's hour is worth another man's hour, but rather that one man during an hour is worth just as much as another man during an hour. Time is everything, man is nothing; he is at the most time's carcass."
Marx hoped for a classless society, a utopia where all would be equal. His book "Das Kapital" was written while he was in London. Part I came out in 1867: "Capital"; Part II, "Process of Circulation" in 1885 and Part III, "Process of Capitalist Production" posthumously in 1894, prepared by Friedrich Engels from notes left by Marx.
"The Communist Manifesto" was a pamphlet published by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in 1848. The manifesto calls upon people to unite, strengthen and prepare for the ultimate revolution.
6. "A lie told often enough becomes the truth" was said by whom?

Answer: Vladimir Lenin

He also said, "The way to crush the bourgeoisie is to grind them between the millstone of taxation and inflation." Sound familiar?

Born Vladimir Ilyitch Ulyanov in Simbirsk (now Ulyanovsk) in 1870, Lenin helped lead the Bolsheviks to power in 1917 Russia. His older brother, Alexander, had been executed in 1887 for attempting to assassinate Tzar Alexander III.

Lenin was a student and admirer of Marxism, and began contributing to revolutionary activities in the 1890s.
7. "As usual, there is a great woman behind every idiot." Who said it?

Answer: John Lennon

He also said, "I believe in everything until it's disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it's in your mind. Who's to say that dreams and nightmares aren't as real as the here and now?"
John Lennon was born in 1940 in Liverpool, Merseyside. He met Paul McCartney in 1957, and thus began one of the most famous collaborations of song writing in history. George Harrison joined them the following year. In 1960 drummer Pete Best joined, and under the management of Brian Epstein from 1961 on, Ringo Starr replaced Best as drummer.
Ironically, John Lennon wrote an autograph for a fan about 6 hours before his death. The fan was Mark David Chapman. Chapman was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 20 years to life. He refused to plead guilty by reason of insanity. He had become a born-again Christian after many years of searching and he took offense to Lennon's disturbing statement that " ...we're more popular than Jesus."
8. "One man with a gun can control 100 without one." was said by whom?

Answer: Vladimir Lenin

He also said, "Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted." Lenin's body has lain in state since his death in 1924, well preserved and in an airtight transparent cover. Approximately 10 million people visited the Red Square mausoleum from 1924 to 1972.

There are long lines, strict rules (no recording devices, no hands in pockets, no irreverence, no hats, nothing suspicious). As interest and visitors decline it may be determined by vote of the Russian parliament whether to eventually bury Vladimir, as he is showing signs of decay.

Not aging, mind you, just kinda falling apart and requiring high maintenance.
9. "Behind every successful man is a woman - behind her is his wife." Who is credited with this quote?

Answer: Groucho Marx

Groucho also said, "A black cat crossing your path signifies that the animal is going somewhere." Now that's profound! Another gem from Groucho, "Those are my principles, and if you don't like them ... well, I have others."
Groucho Marx evidently felt completely at home on the stage and in public. It was there that he was recognized for his ad lib comebacks and zany antics. At home with his family he admitted to feeling left out; he was the middle one of five brothers.
10. "Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives. I think we're being run by maniacs for maniacal ends and I think I'm liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That's what's insane about it." Who made this sensible statement?

Answer: John Lennon

Lennon also said, "Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted."
John Lennon was an enormous contributor to the world of music as well as to the concept of peace being possible not just by believing in it, but by acting for it.
"I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It's just that the translations have gone wrong."
On the negative side, Lennon was reportedly obsessed with assassination and what it would feel like to be shot. During his years as a husband to Yoko Ono, he allegedly spent most of his time in bed, and when not in bed strode around the apartment completely starkers. He did as he wished and either played, meditated or slept while Yoko spent most of her time in the office. Nursemaids and other servants took care of the home.
