Princess Charlotte was the illegitimate daughter of Prince Louis II. The Prince had no legitimate heirs, until Monaco changed their constitution allowing an adopted child to be in line for succession. Princess Charlotte was recognized as an heir only after being adopted by her father.

Prince Rainier III, the son of Princess Charlotte, married the actress Grace Kelly in 1956.
