Actor Don Knotts (1924-2006) was born in Morgantown, WV. He is probably best known for his role as the bumbling Deputy Barney Fife on "The Andy Griffith Show" which ran from 1960 to 1968. He also played Ralph Furley on "Three's Company".

Former basketball great Jerry West was born in Chelyan, West Virginia in 1938. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1960 to 1974. In fact, his silhouette is part of the NBA Logo.
2. Peggy Lee and Angie Dickinson

Peggy Lee (1920-2002) was born Norma Deloris Egstrom in Jamestown, North Dakota. Her career as a singer of jazz and popular music spanned over sixty years. She began on a local radio station, later with Benny Goodman's band, and had a huge hit with the single "Fever" in 1957.

Actress Angie Dickinson was born in Kulm, ND in 1931. After appearing in films like "Rio Bravo" (1959), she went on to star on her own TV series, "Police Woman", as Sergeant Leann 'Pepper' Anderson, from 1974 to 1978.

Judy Garland (1922-1969) was born as Frances Gumm in Grand Rapids, MN. In 1939 she became a household name with her starring role as Dorothy Gale in "The Wizard of Oz". She continued to entertain for more than four decades.

Matthew C. Perry (1794-1858) was born in Newport, Rhode Island. Perry was a Commodore in the United States Navy. His command extended from 1809 to 1858, through several wars, including the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War.

Entertainer, singer and songwriter George M. Cohan (1878-1942) was born in Providence, RI. He began performing in vaudeville with his parents and sister, as "The Four Cohans", before becoming immortalized in "Yankee Doodle Dandy".

Boxer Charles "Sonny" Liston (1932-1970) was born in Sand Slough, Arkansas. In 1962 he captured the World Heavyweight Crown when he knocked out the reining champion Floyd Patterson. In 1974 he lost the title to Muhammad Ali.

Leroy Eldridge Cleaver (1935-1998) was born in Wabbaseka, AR. He was a writer and political activist. Cleaver became a leader of the controversial Black Panther Party and penned a collection of essays in 1968 called "Soul on Ice".

Fashion designer Bill Blass (1922-2002) was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana. At fifteen-years-old he began sewing and selling evening gowns. He soon moved to New York, and became the first male to win Mademoiselle's Design for Living Award.

Playwright Maxwell Anderson (1888-1959) was born in Atlantic, Pennsylvania. In addition to plays like "Winterset", he wrote screenplays for the works of other authors, e.g., "All Quite on the Western Front" and "Death Takes a Holiday".

Painter Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) was born in Allegheny, PA. She spent much of her life in France where she became friends with Impressionist artist Edgar Degas. Among her works are "The Boating Party" and "The Child's Bath", both from 1893.

Author and humorist Erma Bombeck (1927-1996) was born in Bellbrook, Ohio. For over thirty years she wrote a newspaper column about suburban life, and published books which included "The Grass Is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank".
