Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2001, John Olerud hit for the cycle (to get a single, double, triple, and a home run in the same game). He was the ____ Mariner to hit for the cycle.

Answer: 3rd

Jay Buhner was the first Mariner to ever hit for the cycle, doing so on June 23, 1993, against the Oakland Athletics. Since then, two other Mariners accomplished this feat in Alex Rodriguez (June 1997) and John Olerud (June 2001).
2. A no-hitter is a game in which a pitcher does not allow a single hit to the opposing team for an entire game. When Chris Bosio achieved this feat in April 1993, he was the _______ Mariner to throw a no-hitter.

Answer: 2nd

The first Mariner's pitcher to ever pitch a no-hitter was Randy Johnson in June 1990 against the Detroit Tigers. Three years later, Chris Bosio became the second Mariner to accomplish this great achievement. He did it against the Boston Red Sox.
3. 1995 is known as a magical year in Mariners history because it was the first time they ever reached the playoffs. Before getting there however, the M's had to play a one game playoff against the California Angels to determine who would be the American League West winner. Luis Sojo hit a bases-clearing double, eventually scoring on the play due to a throwing error, and that gave the Mariners a commanding lead. Who were the teammates on base during the hit?

Answer: Mike Blowers, Tino Martinez, Joey Cora

Mike Blowers was the runner on third base, Tino Martinez was on second base, and Joey Cora was on first base. Sojo's hit went down the first base line and into the Angels' bullpen. When J.T. Snow finally dug the ball out from under the bleachers, his throw to home plate was cutoff by pitcher Mark Langston. Langston's throw home got past the catcher and allowed Joey Cora to score. Before the catcher could get to the ball and throw it back to Langston at home, Luis Sojo slid in safely.

The play was ruled a double with a two-base throwing error.
4. In 2001, the Mariners won 116 games, matching the all-time record for most wins in a season. Which pitcher recorded the final out of game number 161, against the Texas Rangers, to tie the record?

Answer: Kazuhiro Sasaki

Kazuhiro Sasaki recorded the final out of the game and placed the Mariners in the record books. Sasaki recorded 45 saves that year, coming off another wonderful season in 2000, when he won Rookie of the Year honors. 116 wins tied the 1906 Chicago Cubs for the best record of all-time and gave the 2001 Seattle Mariners the winningest season in American League history.
5. The Mariners joined the majors in 1977, and didn't have a winning season until 1991. What was the team's win-loss record the year they were inaugurated?

Answer: 64 - 98

The 1977 Seattle Mariners finished with a losing record of 64 wins and 98 losses. Losing seasons for new teams is not uncommon, but the Mariners had the second longest drought without a winning season in baseball history, 14 consecutive years. The longest drought was 16 consecutive seasons by the Phillies, from 1933 to 1948 inclusive.
6. How many Mariners were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in the 1990s?

Answer: 1

Gaylord Perry was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1991. He played for the Mariners from 1982-1983, and even though he spent the majority of his career with other teams, he is still considered a Mariner inductee to the Hall of Fame. He recorded his 300th victory in 1982 against the New York Yankees.
7. Dave Niehaus was inducted into the the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame in May 2000. He was the _____ inductee.

Answer: 2nd

The Seattle Mariners created a team Hall of Fame in June 1997. The first inductee was Alvin Davis (1984-1991). He played first base for Seattle and was know as "Mr. Mariner". The third inductee was Jay Buhner (1988-2001), who played right field for the M's and was known by the nickname "Bone". Edgar Martinez (1987-2004) was the fourth member of the group, and he played third base before switching to the designated-hitter position.

The second member is known as "The voice of the Mariners", Dave Niehaus.

He had been the Mariners announcer since their inauguration in 1977.
8. In 2002, Bret Boone and Mike Cameron did something in an inning that had never been done before. What did they do?

Answer: Hit back-to-back home runs twice

On May 2nd against the Chicago White Sox, Bret Boone and Mike Cameron hit back-to-back home runs twice in one inning. Cameron went on to hit two more home runs that game, giving him four, and tying a record for the most home runs in one game by a single player.
9. Ichiro Suzuki set a record for the most hits by a single player in one season in 2004. Whose record did he break?

Answer: George Sisler

George Sisler set the record with 257 hits in the 1920 season for the St. Louis Browns. The record stood for 84 years before Ichiro eclipsed it with 262 hits in 2004. Back when Sisler played, however, the regular season lasted only 154 games, whereas with Ichiro, the regular season was 162 games.
10. The 1999 season was a sad time for the Mariners. They had a losing season (79-83), didn't make the playoffs, and Ken Griffey Jr. was traded to the Cincinnati Reds. For whom was Griffey traded?

Answer: Mike Cameron, Bret Tomko, Antonio Perez

The Mariners got Mike Cameron in the trade to take over in centerfield. They also added Bret Tomko to try and help with some starting pitching issues, but Tomko never really amounted to much for the M's. Antonio Perez was another player involved in the trade, but he too never really amounted to much. Mike Cameron won two Gold Glove awards, once in 2001 and again in 2003.

He also made it to the All-Star Game in 2001.
