Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Blazers entered the NBA in 1970. Their first-ever draft pick went on to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award. Who was he?

Answer: Geoff Petrie

Petrie was the first of two Blazers to win consecutive Rookie of the Year awards, sharing it with Boston's Dave Cowens in the 1970-71 NBA season. Wicks won the award in the 1971-72 season.
2. In 1972, the Blazers selected LaRue Martin of Loyola University #1 overall, the first of several questionable first-round draft picks in their history. Who was the future NBA Hall of Famer that went #2 overall that the Blazers passed on?

Answer: Bob McAdoo

Portland also passed on Erving in favor of Martin that year, but he went to Milwaukee with the #13 pick. 'Dr. J' never played for the Bucks, however, as he was already under contract with the ABA's Virginia Squires.
3. 1978 saw Portland select another center, Mychal Thompson, over another future Hall of Famer, Larry Bird. However, Portland was not the only team that passed on Bird that year. With which pick did Boston select the Indiana State star?

Answer: Sixth

Bird was only a junior when he was drafted by Boston, who used a little-known rule that allowed a team to draft a player when the class with which he entered college was graduating. Bird had taken a year off from college after leaving the University of Indiana after one year.

The "junior-eligible" rule was removed shortly thereafter, closing the loophole of which Boston had taken advantage.
4. In 1984, Portland selected University of San Diego forward Mike Whitmarsh in the fifth round, but he never played for the Blazers. In what other sport did Whitmarsh find the most success, including winning a silver medal in the 1996 Olympic Games?

Answer: Beach Volleyball

Whitmarsh and former volleyball teammate Mike Dodd came in second to Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes in Atlanta in 1996 to win the silver. Whitmarsh won several AVP tour awards in his career, including Rookie of the Year in 1990, and a Lifetime Achievement award in 2004.
5. Whose retired jersey hanging in the Rose Garden rafters was worn by a player acquired by Portland in the 1977 ABA Dispersal Draft?

Answer: Maurice Lucas

The other three players were original Blazers draft picks. These four, along with Larry Steele and Bill Walton, helped Portland win their first NBA championship in 1977, and all had their jerseys retired as a result. In addition, two numbers have been symbolically retired for non-players; #1 for Blazers founder Larry Weinberg in 1992, and #77 for former Blazers coach Jack Ramsay in 1993.
6. Which of these four NBA Hall of Famers was not selected by Portland in the NBA draft?

Answer: Moses Malone

Malone was acquired by Portland in the 1977 ABA dispersal draft, but never played for the Blazers as he was traded to Buffalo before the season began.
7. Which Blazers 2004 draft pick became the first Korean-born player to play in an NBA game?

Answer: Ha Seung-Jin

Ha, a second-round draft pick in 2004, first entered an NBA game on January 7, 2005. Ha played in both the NBA and the NBA Development League before being traded to Milwaukee in 2006, and he was released later that year.
8. Under new interim general manager Kevin Pritchard, the Blazers made a record six draft-day trades in 2006. Which player who played high school basketball in the Portland area was acquired in one of those trades?

Answer: Dan Dickau

Originally from Vancouver, Washington, Dickau was acquired from Boston along with Raef LaFrentz and the #7 overall pick in exchange for Sebastian Telfair and Theo Ratliff. Telfair and Ratliff eventually became key pieces in the trade that sent all-star Kevin Garnett to Boston from the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the #7 pick would be used by Portland to acquire future All-Star Brandon Roy.
9. One of the six trades Portland made in the 2006 draft involved acquiring Texas forward LaMarcus Aldridge from Chicago for Tyrus Thomas and another player. Who was the other player?

Answer: Viktor Khryapa

Khryapa, Monia, and Sinanovic all had short stints with Portland ranging from Summer League to a starting role, but they all eventually left the NBA to play in Europe.
10. In the four NBA drafts from 2005-2008, the Blazers selected a total of 15 players. How many of these players were traded during draft night?

Answer: 10

The players not traded immediately on draft night were Greg Oden (2007), Josh McRoberts (2007), Taurean Green (2007), Joel Freeland (2006), and Martell Webster (2005). None of the players Portland drafted in 2008 were with the team by the time draft night ended.
