Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team received the first pick of the 2006 draft?

Answer: Houston Texans

The Houston Texans were granted the first pick of the draft by virtue of their disasterous 2005 regular season record of 2 wins and 14 losses. New Orleans ended up on 3-13 with the Packers at 4-12. Pittsburgh won the Super Bowl and would generally pick last in each round (draft picks may have been traded by teams).
2. Which player was drafted first?

Answer: Mario Williams

Williams, a defensive end from North Carolina State, caused a huge shock when he was drafted first. Almost the entire league felt that Reggie Bush, an exceptional running back, would be given the coveted #1 pick. Bush was picked second, followed by Young and Ferguson. Young was the first QB to be selected in the '06 draft.
3. There was only one athlete in the draft from Vanderbilt College. Who was it?

Answer: Jay Cutler

Cutler, a quarterback, was selected in the first round at 11th overall. He was narrowly beaten by Leinart, a fellow QB to 10th spot. Cutler went to the Denver Broncos while Leinart went to the Arizona Cardinals. Hawk and Huff were drafted 5th and 7th overall respectively, going to the Packers and Oakland Raiders.
4. How many running backs were drafted in the first round?

Answer: 4

As well as Reggie Bush, Laurence Maroney was drafted 21st by the New England Patriots from Minnesota. DeAngelo Williams was picked 27th by the Carolina Panthers from Memphis, and Joseph Addai was selected 30th by the Indianapolis Colts from Louisiana State.
5. Who was the first player drafted in Round 2?

Answer: DeMeco Ryans

Ryans, from Alabama College, was an outside linebacker, one of seven picked in the opening two rounds (five in the first round). Jackson was picked second in the round two by Cleveland with WR Jackson picked 4th in the round by the Patriots. Klopfenstein was selected 14th by the St. Louis Rams (46th overall).
6. The same team picked first in every round.

Answer: False

Houston picked first in each of the first four rounds, but traded their 5th round pick to Buffalo. They again picked first in round 6 but traded their 7th round pick to Cincinnati. Incidentally, in round 4, Houston had the first two picks in the round, having traded for the second pick with New Orleans.
7. Which player was the last to be selected?

Answer: Kevin McMahan

McMahan, a wide receiver, was selected 255th overall by the Oakland Raiders from Maine University. The player picked last has generally been dubbed "Mr Irrelevant" because of the likelihood of him getting cut first. As "Mr Irrelevant", McMahan received a parade and a Heisman Trophy lookalike (nicknamed 'Lowsman' trophy), of a player fumbling the ball.
8. How many players did the New Orleans Saints select in the draft?

Answer: 8

They were, in round 1 - Reggie Bush (RB, Southern California), round 2 - Roman Harper (FS, Alabama), round 4 - Jahri Evans (OT, Bloomsburg), round 5 - Rob Ninkovich (DE, Purdue), round 6 - Mike Hass (WR, Oregon State) and Josh 'Bernard' Lay (CB, Pittsburgh), round 7 - Zach Strief (G, Northwestern) and Marques Colston (TE, Hofstra). The Saints did not select anyone in round 3.
9. How many combined kickers and punters were selected in the draft?

Answer: 4

Although there were four punters and four kickers up for selection, only four were picked (two of each). They were kicker Stephen Gostkowksi who was drafted in the fourth round by the Patriots from Memphis, kicker Kurt Smith who was drafted in the sixth round by the Chargers from Virginia, punter Sam Koche who was drafted in the sixth round by the Ravens from Nebraska, and finally punter Ryan Plackemeier who was drafted in the final round by the Seahawks from Wake Forest.
10. The 2006 NFL Draft was the _____ draft in NFL history.

Answer: 71st

The first draft was held on February 8, 1936, and has been held every year since. Remarkably, this included the early 1940s, despite World War II going on.
