Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first American dreadnoughts were designed before the British ship, but they took much longer to construct. What was the name of the first American dreadnought class?

Answer: South Carolina class

While designed before HMS Dreadnought, the South Carolina and Michigan were not completed until 1910. These ships introduced the superfiring turret, with a turret located above and behind another. The design eventually became standard for all battleships. South Carolina and Michigan were both scrapped in 1924.
2. Japan had supposedly designed an all-big-gun ship class, also before HMS Dreadnought, rumors of which sped up British plans for its vessel. Due to lack of Japanese gun manufacturing capacity, however, the ships were completed with a mixed-caliber armament. Name the ship class.

Answer: Satsuma class

The Aki and Satsuma were completed with a mixed-caliber armament of 12 inch and 10 inch guns, and were classified as, "semi-dreadnoughts". Japan had only been building capital ships for a short time, and there were not enough 12 inch guns available for the two ships to be true dreadnoughts.
3. Japan did complete her first dreadnought battleship class in 1912. What was the class name?

Answer: Kawachi class

Japan's first class of true dreadnoughts were the Kawachi and Settsu. Both were completed in 1912 and served in World War I. Kawachi sank after a magazine explosion in 1918. Settsu was converted into a target ship in 1924 and was scrapped in 1946.
4. Several South American navies also acquired dreadnought battleships in the early part of the 20th century, as none of the countries had the technology to build them on their own. What was the name of the first class of Brazilian ships, which were built in Britain?

Answer: Minas Gerias class

Brazil initiated the dreadnought race in South America by contracting for the Minas Gerias and her sister ship, Sao Paolo. Both ships were completed in 1910. Minas Gerias was scrapped in 1954. Sao Paolo sank in 1947 while on the way to be broken up in Italy.
5. Brazil ordered a third ship from Britain, the Rio de Janeiro, but ran out of funds. The ship was sold to Turkey and renamed Sultan Osman I. Did she ever serve in the Turkish navy?

Answer: No

The ship was seized by the British upon completion in 1914 and renamed Agincourt. She served in the Royal Navy until being declared obsolete and scrapped in 1922. Agincourt, upon completion, had the most gun turrets of any battleship with seven.
6. Argentina was the second South American country to order dreadnoughts from a foreign builder. Where were her two ships, Rivadavia and Moreno, built?

Answer: United States

Rivadavia and Moreno were built for the Argentine Navy in the United States, both being completed in 1915.Rivadavia was scrapped in 1959 and Moreno in 1957.
7. Chile's first dreadnought was ordered from Britain. What was she called?

Answer: Almirante Latorre

Chile's first dreadnought, the Almirante Latorre, was completed in 1915, and, like some other ships built for foreign navies in Britain, was seized by the Royal Navy. She was renamed HMS Canada and served through World War I. Almirante Latorre was returned to Chile in 1920 and was scrapped in 1959.
8. The second dreadnought ordered by Chile was also built in Great Britain as the Almirante Cochrane. Did this ship ever serve in the Chilean Navy?

Answer: No

The Almirante Cochrane was purchased by the British while still building. She was completed as the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle in 1920 and served into World War II. She was sunk in 1942.
9. Aside from Brazil, Chile and Argentina, how many other South American countries operated dreadnought battleships?

Answer: None

Due to the expense of building or buying them from foreign shipyards, most countries could not afford dreadnoughts. In the end, the ones that did serve the South American navies proved to be far from good value, costing large amounts of money that could have been spent on more useful vessels.
10. There is only one ship left from the many built by the twelve countries that operated dreadnought battleships or battlecruisers. What is her name?

Answer: USS Texas

The only surviving dreadnought battleship is the USS Texas, a New York class ship completed in 1914. Texas served through both World Wars and is now a museum ship near Houston, Texas.
