"Metallica" (1991), commonly known as "The Black Album", was released on August 12, 1991. It was Metallica's first album produced by Canadian record producer Bob Rock and is their highest selling album to date. The album has sold over 30 million copies worldwide and is RIAA certified 2x Diamond in the United States, representing over 20,000,000 copies sold.
The Black Album was noteworthy among early Metallica fans for its change in sound, away from the more thrash influenced, fast-paced music that characterized their first four albums, and towards a less aggressive, more radio-friendly sound.
The Black Album was Metallica's second album with bassist Jason Newsted, who replaced bassist Cliff Burton after Cliff's untimely passing in 1986 after a tour bus accident in Sweden.
The Black Album was such a massive success that Metallica toured around the world in support of the album for three years, from August 1991 to August 1994, playing well over 300 dates, before taking an extended break. They would break for nine months before beginning work on their next album and took a break from gigging for over a year.
The incorrect answers were "The Trooper" and "The Number of the Beast" by Iron Maiden, "Walk" by Pantera, "Iron Man" and "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath, "Rock You Like a Hurricane" by the Scorpions, "Mr. Crowley" by Ozzy Osbourne, and "Heaven" by Warrant.
