Mixed Food and Drink Trivia Questions

1. It might be a bit early in the day, but which French delicacies might I be offered for breakfast while travelling on the LGV Méditerranée?

From Quiz
Locomotive Cuisine

Answer: Croissants and champagne

Part of France's famed high speed train network, the LGV Mediterranee services the 250 kilometre route between Marseilles and Nimes. This gives a passenger time partake of one of the culinary delights of France, a freshly baked croissant. Croissants are the crescent shaped, buttery and flaky pastries that are oh, so delightful. They are made from yeast leavened dough that is rolled thinly, layered with butter and then folded into shape and baked. The steam created by the butter melting during cooking gives them the light, flaky texture that is so characteristic of the pastry. What could be better than a fresh croissant for breakfast? One, of course, that is accompanied by a chilled glass of one of France's most famous contributions to the world of fine dining, Champagne. Champagne is the sparkling wine that is produced in the Champagne region in northern France. To be able to attach the 'appellation' champagne to your wine, you have to conform to very strict guidelines. These include where the grapes are sourced from, the way they are pressed and to the fact that the bubbles must be produced by a secondary fermentation in the bottle as opposed to adding outside carbonation. A classic champagne usually includes a blend of three varietals, pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay. Famous champagne producers include Moet en Chandon, Bollinger and Tattinger.

2. Which citrus fruit, that comes in yellow, pink and white varieties, is often featured in calorie controlled diets, but also has it's own 'named' diet?

From Quiz Diets - For Better or Worse

Answer: Grapefruit

The Grapefruit diet has been around in one form or another since the 1930s. It works off the claim that grapefruit has its own 'fat busting enzyme' that aids weight loss. Grapefruits are often seen as a dieter's friend, as they are low calorie and not very sweet tasting so they appear quite virtuous. As part of a balanced diet they contain plenty of vitamin C and fibre, but eaten on their own do not provide protein or fat. You may lose weight because of calorie deficit Grapefruit should also be avoided with certain medications where there is a proven enzyme reaction.

3. What is the name of the traditional Korean dish that comprises of salted and fermented vegetables flavoured with a variety of seasonings?

From Quiz In a Bit of a Pickle

Answer: Kimchi

Kimchi is a staple dish in Korea served mainly as a side dish. Its ingredients can vary greatly but generally consist of a combination of vegetables, ginger, garlic and salt which are pickled and fermented. Cabbage is the most common vegetable found in the pickle, but many other vegetables can be combined to make it. There are hundreds of different kimchi dishes which can vary from region to region and the season in which it is produced.

4. What is the principal flavour in Devil's food cake?

From Quiz What the Devil Had for His Dinner

Answer: chocolate

Devil's food cake is to chocolate cake what angel food cake is to white cake or yellow cake ... just as good only better. Since about 1905, bakers have made Devil's food cake following a recipe created in the US. The result is a chocolate cake made with chocolate frosting between the layers. Recipes change over time. Original Devil's food cake was made with little blocks of unsweetened baking chocolate; it is now more often made with unsweetened cocoa powder. Coffee, either as a liquid or dry finely-ground espresso powder, is sometimes added to kick up the chocolate flavour. No one is quite sure how Devil's food cake got its name but it is likely that it was in contrast to angel food cake, which had already been invented.

5. So, if bacteria is used in fermented food, shouldn't these foods make you sick since they are basically rotten?

From Quiz Don't Eat Me. I'm Rotten.

Answer: No, the bacteria used in fermentation are probiotic and actually beneficial.

When fermentation uses bacteria, it actually helps preserve the food. The bacteria used are probiotic, a healthy type of bacteria our bodies use to help break down food in the small intestines. The fermentation process creates an environment more to the probiotic bacteria's liking, allowing the healthy bacteria to flourish, which suppresses the harmful bacteria, thereby making the food safe to eat.

6. If I'm having breakfast and I'm missing a food that usually comes with bacon, what am I missing?

From Quiz Missing food

Answer: Eggs

Bacon and eggs are the ideal low-carb meal, however it is a meal that tends to be high in fat and salt - which works perfectly if you've switched to a Keto way of eating! Of course eating bacon and eggs every day can get boring so why not switch it up a bit - bacon can be grilled, fried or oven baked. Eggs can be fried, poached, coddled, boiled, scrambled, hard, soft, medium, the list goes on.... All hail the person who decided that the perfect accompaniment for their slab of salted pig was inside the shell that was laid by a chicken.

7. What can you add to spaghetti to make Spaghetti Frittata?

From Quiz The Leftovers

Answer: Eggs

Did you make too much spaghetti last night? Add some eggs, and a few other ingredients and turn it into a Spaghetti Frittata. The ingredients are: 8 ounces uncooked whole-wheat spaghetti, or 4 cups cooked, extra-virgin olive oil, chopped onions, eggs, nonfat milk, freshly grated Parmesan cheese, chopped fresh parsley, chopped fresh basil, freshly ground pepper and optionally a diced tomato. Just cook the spaghetti (or use leftovers) and then mix the rest together in a bowl, add the spaghetti and cook on high until done.

8. Carbohydrates make good comfort food. The diet in Zambia is typically heavy in starch, so it is a great place to find comfort food. What is unusual about Zambian "Mealie Bread", a type of cornbread?

From Quiz Comforting Food

Answer: It is made with whole corn kernels instead of cornmeal.

Mealie bread is typically flavoured with chilies in Zambia and uses whole kernels of corn rather than corn meal. "Mealie" is another name for corn in Zambia. The bread is very moist, and the sweet/hot flavour makes it a real comforting treat when dipped in stew. Delicious recipes can be found on various websites.

9. What faithful legume can be made into hummus, and can also be used in salads, stews and even baking?

From Quiz Veganism: A Huge Missed Steak?

Answer: Chickpeas

Chickpeas belong to the legume family, grown commonly in the Middle East and India. It is incredibly versatile, owing largely to its ability to absorb the flavours of whatever it is cooked with. This means it goes well in salads, stews and stir fries. Chickpea flour is also common in baking, especially for those who need to avoid gluten; I was surprised to find that mashed chickpeas work quite well in chocolate chip cookie recipes. Perhaps the most well-known uses for chickpeas, however, is hummus- a Middle Eastern dip or spread usually made with chickpeas, oil, lemon and salt. For nutritionally-minded folks, chickpeas are an excellent source of protein, iron, fibre and zinc, amongst others.

12. Work, rest, and play: Which country is the home of 'deep fried Mars bars'?

From Quiz Where's It From? The Food Provenance Quiz

Answer: Scotland

The Mars Bar is an eponymous product of the Mars confectionary company. The bar comprises nougat and caramel coated in milk chocolate and has been made since 1932. While the chocolate bar hails from England, the 'deep fried' variety was created in Scotland. To make it, normal bars are coated in batter and deep fried in cooking oil. This remarkable combination was first heard of in Aberdeen in about 1995. "A Mars a day helps you work, rest, and play" was formerly an adverting slogan.

13. Chef Kairlus loves pesto! It's an Italian sauce that is usually made with pine nuts and olive oil. There's something else, but she can't quite remember. Which ingredient gives pesto its bright green colour?

From Quiz Source That Sauce

Answer: Basil

The word 'pesto' comes from an Italian word meaning 'to crush' and was traditionally made with a pestle and mortar. While there are variations of the sauce, it usually contains pine nuts, olive oil, cheese, and basil. Tomatoes can be added to make pesto rosso, which is red instead of green.

14. Nestle's Quik was the brand name of a product I grew up with, though it has been known as Nesquik in Europe from the 1950s (and worldwide since 1999). What was this Quik that I remember?

From Quiz Quickly Quaffing Quik

Answer: Powdered drink mix

The classic flavour of Quik was chocolate, though other flavours did exist. Strawberry was good, banana was just OK - in my opinion. The drink was easy to prepare as all you needed was a glass of milk and a spoon to introduce the powder and stir it thoroughly. It was one way to get a youngster to drink milk!

15. How is salt pork different from regular pork?

From Quiz Food and Chemistry Go Together

Answer: it's been soaked in salt brine, with perhaps a few other ingredients

Salt pork used to be almost any part of the pig, soaked in brine to preserve it over the summer. The salt alone would keep it safe to eat, if it was kept underwater in the brine. It was easier to make because it didn't need to be smoked and dried like ham and bacon. Nowadays, pork is available year round in many ways, so salt pork is mostly used for seasoning. It's therefore usually chunks of fat with a little lean, cut up in small pieces, soaked in a salt brine with perhaps sugar and preservatives. There's usually not enough salt in modern salt pork to preserve it alone.

16. In which European country did the delicious dessert Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest gâteau or Black Forest cake) originate?

19. Electric pots are convenient for serving fondue, but cheese or dessert fondues are often served in ceramic pots heated over an open flame. What name is given to an earthenware fondue pot?

From Quiz Dip It, Dip It Good

Answer: Caquelon

A caquelon is a shallow, wide, heavy pot with a thick bottom that has good heat retention, and it usually has a handle on one side. For oil or broth fondues, the pots need to be deeper and be able to withstand high temperatures, so cast iron or steel pots are preferred. The caquelon pot is used pretty much exclusively for fondues, so if you see a restaurant name that includes the word "caquelon", there is a good chance that they serve fondue.

20. This delicious raw food makes a juicy crispy sound when we bite into it. Name the fruit with beautiful color and smooth skin for a healthy chomp:

30. Beluga caviar has been enjoyed by elite members of society for many years. From which type fish is typical Beluga caviar taken?

From Quiz Not on my Budget

Answer: Sturgeon

Many people think that the Beluga caviar is taken from the Beluga whale. The term "Beluga" simply refers to the Russian word meaning "white", and the Beluga whale is not the producer of the fine roe known as Beluga caviar. The Beluga sturgeon is an anadromous fish which means it moves from the salt water where it normally lives to the fresh water where it spawns its eggs. The salmon is a common anadromous fish as is the striped bass, smelt and shad. Beluga caviar can be seen priced anywhere from two to three thousand US dollars per pound, but lesser grades can be obtained at lower prices.
