Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sanjay Dutt is a well-known actor who has been a part of the Indian film industry for more than 20 years. Why was he arrested and imprisoned for 18 months in 1993?

Answer: His involvement in the March 1993 bomb blasts which took place in Mumbai.

Sanjay Dutt was arrested on April 19, 1993 for harbouring the terrorists involved in the Mumbai bomb blasts and for illegal possession of weapons under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA). On November 28, 2006, a special TADA court acquitted him of terrorism charges but held him guilty for possessing arms under the Arms Act.
2. Bollywood's enfant terrible, Salman Khan, is always in the news for his off the screen exploits. While shooting for a film in Rajasthan, he happened to kill animals belonging to an endangered species during a hunting expedition. Which animals were they?

Answer: Chinkara (Indian gazelle)

Chinkaras are considered sacred by the Bishnoi community of Rajasthan. In addition, he also killed several blackbucks. He was sentenced to a five-year jail term for this but appealed against it in a higher court. In 2002, he was arrested for killing one person and injuring three others while driving under the influence of alcohol.

He's also been in trouble for getting into brawls at nightclubs and physically assaulting his then girlfriend, Aishwarya Rai.
3. Amitabh Bachchan is one of the biggest stars of the Indian film industry. He is the first Indian actor to have had his wax statue installed at the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, London. Which scandal marred his brief political career?

Answer: Bofors scandal

Amitabh Bachchan was one of the people accused of receiving kickbacks from Bofors AB for obtaining the contract to supply India with 155 mm field howitzers. Others included the then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi. This scandal rocked the nation in the 1980s and led to the defeat of the Indian National Congress in the 1989 general elections. Bachchan was eventually acquitted, though it led to him quitting politics.
4. This Indian actress hit the headlines when she accused co-contestant Jade Goody of racial harassment on the UK version of the reality show, "Celebrity Big Brother". She then went on to win the show with 63% of the votes.

Answer: Shilpa Shetty

The alleged racist comments made by Jade Goody, Jo O'Meara and Danielle Lloyd resulted in a huge furore with the issue being raised in the British parliament. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, also condemned the incident during his recent visit to India. Since leaving the Big Brother house, Shilpa has denied the racism charges.
5. Aishwarya Rai, a former Miss World (1994), is considered to be one of the most powerful women of the Indian film industry. In 2000, she was named the Most Beautiful Miss World of All Time. Is it true that a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed against her for promoting untouchability?

Answer: Yes

Aishwarya Rai got engaged to actor Abhishek Bachchan, the son of Amitabh Bachchan, after the New York premier of their film 'Guru' in January 2007. Allegedly, she was born under the influence of Mars and is known as a Manglik according to Hindu astrology.

This is considered inauspicious and deemed to be unlucky for the spouse. To ward off the negative influence she was supposedly made to marry a tree and hence, the PIL.
6. Noted actor, Aamir Khan, has got into trouble with social activists for his endorsement of a popular soft drink. Which soft drink was it?

Answer: Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola has been accused of using polluted water, depleting the water table and causing water pollution. Coke was also found to contain unhealthy levels of pesticides.
7. This actor made offensive comments against the Government of Pakistan during a visit there to promote the film, 'Taj Mahal'. Due to this incident, he has been blacklisted by the Pakistani President and banned from entering the country.

Answer: Feroz Khan

Feroz Khan allegedly made these comments at a party given for the promotion of the film while he was in an inebriated state.
8. In 2001, this actor was arrested for purchasing cocaine from a drug peddler.

Answer: Fardeen Khan

Nine grams of cocaine were found in the possession of Khan and the drug peddler. Under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, a person found possessing two or more grams of cocaine is liable to ten years rigorous imprisonment. In February 2007, the Bombay High Court rejected his plea to undergo detoxification instead of facing a trial.
9. This actor called for a press conference to complain about threatening calls he received from Salman Khan, another actor. It resulted in him being blacklisted by the directors and actors from Salman's clique for a short while.

Answer: Vivek Oberoi

Vivek Oberoi claimed the calls had been made because he was dating Aishwarya Rai, Salman's former flame. This incident proved to be very embarrassing for Oberoi.
10. Which actress got into trouble with a certain section of society for visiting a religious place of worship without proper attire?

Answer: Katrina Kaif

A short sequence of the film 'Namaste London' was shot at Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti Dargah in the city of Ajmer which is a Muslim place of worship. Though Kaif wore a scarf to cover her head, she was wearing a knee length skirt which exposed her bare legs. This was considered disrespectful and the dargah committee members raised objections.
