Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these US Presidents have lived to well over age 90?

Answer: Ronald Reagan

Ronald Reagan turned 93 on February 6, 2004. Nixon died at 81. Hoover and Adams died at age 90.
2. There was a real Smokey Bear.

Answer: True

The "real" Smokey was found as a burned cub clinging to a tree during a forest fire in New Mexico in 1950. Smokey lived until 1976. He was named after a character in a WWII poster promoting fire prevention.
3. In the time frame between the September 11th attacks and the building of One World Trade Center, what was the tallest building in the United States (not including antennas)?

Answer: Sears Tower

The Sears Tower in Chicago is 1,450 feet tall at 110 stories. The Empire State Building is 1,250 feet tall. (Both ignoring antennas.) The CN Tower in Toronto is 1,815 feet high but is not in the US. The Petronas Towers in Malaysia are 1,483. A new building is under construction in Taipei which will be 1,667 feet tall.

The World Trade Center towers were not as tall as the Sears Tower.
4. Leap years are needed every four years because the orbit of the earth is not exactly 365 days. How long is a tropical year - the length of time it takes to go from one solstice to the next?

Answer: Slightly less than 365.25 days

The orbit is 11 minutes and 14 seconds less than 365.25 days. Years ending in 00 that are not divisible by 400 are not leap years such as 1700, 1800, and 1900. The method is so exact, the calendar would take 3,300 years to get off 1 day.
5. Which of the following words are NOT used as both a verb and noun with totally unrelated meanings?

Answer: Read

Fry as a verb means to cook in a certain way and as a noun it is a young fish. Bark as a verb means to make a sound like a dog and as a noun is the covering on a tree. Pall as a verb means to lose strength and as a noun is a cloth draped over a coffin. Read is mainly a verb and its noun meanings all relate to the verb form.
6. What is the main source of asphalt?

Answer: Refined from crude petroleum

Most roads are paved with asphalt. A very small amount of asphalt is found naturally in pits or lakes, but most is refined from petroleum.
7. What is the largest state in land area that is completely east of the Mississippi River?

Answer: Georgia

Georgia has 57,906 square miles, Florida 53,927, Michigan 53,804, and New York has 47,214. Interestingly, most of the states west of the Mississippi are bigger. Before you send in corrections, the question was land area. Florida and Michigan are bigger if you include water area.
8. Sound travels fastest through which of these mediums?

Answer: Wood

Sound is created by vibrating objects between the source and recipient of the sound. Sound vibrates better through water and is the basis for sonar tracking of submarines. Sound does not travel through a vacuum. You could not hear someone talking to you in outer space without a mechanical device like a radio.

Sound travels fastest through solids, slower through liquids, and slowest through gases.
9. Several movies and their sequels have been made simultaneously with the same cast, direction, production and sets. They are usually released several months apart. Which one of the following pairs of movies were not made simultaneously?

Answer: "Star Wars" and "The Empire Strikes Back"

"Star Wars" and its sequel "The Empire Strikes Back" were made and released 3 years apart, 1977 and 1980.
10. What metal was used to coat the Statue of Liberty?

Answer: Copper

In 2003, The Statue of Liberty was the largest statue in the world. It was given to the US by France in 1884 as a symbol of friendship and liberty.
