Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What caused Belize to move its capital from coastal Belize City to inland Belmopan in 1970?

Answer: A hurricane

Belmopan is located in the interior of Belize and is centrally located. It was installed as the capital in 1970 after Hurricane Hattie destroyed the previous capital which was located on the eastern coast. Belmopan is very small with a 2010 census population of 16451 (Belize City is the largest with 57 000 people).

While it was constructed well away from the coast to avoid hurricanes the new town was not placed directly on the Belize River. This avoided flooding damage. The new capital is built around a ring road that is 4km in circumference.

The Government buildings and parklands are all located within this ring road.
2. Located on Kaafu Atoll, of what country is Malé the capital?

Answer: Maldives

Malé is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, with 133,000 people crammed into less than six square kilometres. It enjoys a tropical monsoon climate, with both wet and dry seasons, but with relatively stable temperatures. It is served by Velana International Airport. Most people travel around the island by bus or ferry.
3. The capital city of which country is now Maputo, but it was previously known as Lourenço Marques?

Answer: Mozambique

Maputo was formerly known as Lourenço Marques after the country gained independence for Portugal. It is situated on the Indian Ocean, not far from the South African border. Its population passed the million mark in the early part of the 21st century.

It is the home of powerhouses such as Samsung, LG and Hyundai. With a history that goes back some two thousand years, its economic standing sees it playing host to numerous financial conferences such as the 2010 G-20 Summit.
5. The Old Town, Gamla Stan, is in Stockholm, capital of which European country?

Answer: Sweden

Gamla Stan is in Stockholm. It is called an "old town" because it represents either the city's historic or original core. Gamla stan/Stockholm are situated on Sweden's east coast, where Sweden's third largest lake, Lake Mälaren, flows into the Baltic Sea. It is located just south of the 60th parallel, meaning reduced hours of sunlight in winter. The 1912 Summer Olympics were held in Stockholm. Its nickname is "the Venice of the North" due to the many lakes there.

7. Discounting cities in Australia and New Zealand, which country's capital city is the largest city in the South Pacific?

Answer: Papua New Guinea (Port Moresby)

Captain John Moresby, in 1873, was the first Briton to see Port Moresby and he named it in honour of his father Fairfax Moresby. As its name indicates, it sits on a body of water, in this case, the Gulf of Papua. Economically, the city is booming thanks to the mountain of natural resources that the entire country is sitting on. An indication of rapid rise in world recognition is that the 2018 APEC Summit was held there.

Answer: True

Bandar Seri Begawan, which sits on the Brunei River, has a population of approximately 100,000, which is slightly more than 35% of the entire island's population. The city is a centre for furniture and textile production. It is also the home of the Sultan's palace, which has been recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest residential palace in the world.
9. Within Djibouti, what geographical advantage does its capital Djibouti (City) have?

Answer: Located on the Red Sea

Djibouti is a new country formed in 1977 when it sought independence from Ethiopia which forms it southern and western borders. Somalia is to the south east and Eritrea to the north. The eastern boundary is the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. In an unusual twist the country is named after the capital as Djibouti the city previously existed within the Ethiopian boundaries.

It has over half a million residents which is over 70% of the country's population. Its strategic location near busy shipping lanes makes its leading industry refuelling and transshipment services.
10. The capital of Barbados is Bridgetown. How did the capital get its name?

Answer: When the Europeans landed on Barbados, it was uninhabited but there was a bridge across the swamp

Barbados is a small island country in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies off the north-east coast of South America. About half of the country's quarter of a million people live in the capital Bridgetown. When the British landed there in 1628, they found the island was uninhabited but there was a bridge spanning the Careenage (swamp). The settlement became a town and was then called Town of Saint Michael but became Bridgetown when a new bridge was built across the swamp in 1654. Barbados is the only city outside the United States that George Washington visited.
