Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following countries or empires did NOT, at some time, rule Lebanon?

Answer: Saudi Arabia

Lebanon was assimilated into the Roman Empire in 64 BC when Pompey the Great declared it part of the Syrian province. The Ottoman Turks conquered the eastern Mediterranean coast in 1516 and Lebanon became part of their empire. France took control of the country shortly after World War I, but Lebanon was granted independence on 22 November, 1943.
2. How long was the Lebanese civil war that started in the 1970s?

Answer: 16 years

This bloody war between the Christians, Muslims, and Palestinians lasted from 1975 to 1991. At the end of the civil war between the Christian Maronites and the Muslim Druze in 1860, France and Britain stepped in to create a Christian-dominated government. Shortly after Lebanon gained its independence in 1943, tensions began to mount under its Christian administration - Muslims, comprising more than half the population, were not represented. Numerous rebellions ensued, and all-out civil war erupted in 1975.
3. What is the currency in Lebanon?

Answer: Pound

4. This city was destroyed in 551 AD by a triple catastrophe - an earthquake, a tidal wave, and a fire. It is also the location of one of the most lucrative bank robberies in history - $50 million was taken - and Keanu Reeves, star of "The Matrix", was born here. What city is this?

Answer: Beirut

Beirut's name first appeared in cuneiform almost 3,500 years ago.
5. Lebanon was first inhabited by the Canaanites around 3000 BC. These people sold a purple dye derived from a rare sea snail, which led the Greeks to lend them what name?

Answer: Phoenicians

The Greek word "phoinikes" refers to the color purple. "Ostrium" is another word for purple - the dye used by the Phoenicians leaks from the shell ("ostreon") of the myrex snail when it is cut with an iron blade. The description can be found the Liber de bestiarum natura, a 16th century manuscript belonging to Henry VIII.
6. What is the predominant religion in Lebanon?

Answer: Islam

About 70% of the population is Muslim. The various sects include Shi'a, Sunni, Isma'ilite, and Druze. 30% of Lebanese are Christians, and less than 1% are Jewish. On the government mandated identify card given to every Lebanese citizen, 17 different religious groups are represented.
7. What "color" was the line, the "no-man's land," that divided 1975 Beirut into Christian and Muslim areas?

Answer: green

The Green Line was so named because of the abundant vegetation growing in the abandoned region.
8. The first and only Lebanese census was held in 1932. Under a system of proportional representation, the Christians formed the government, even though there were more Muslims in the country. Why did this happen?

Answer: Many Muslims lacked proper identification, and were noted on the census as "foreigners"

Some 73,000 Armenian, Syrian, and Chaldean refugees living near Lebanon were counted in the census as Christians, while approximately 60,000 Muslims were counted as "foreigners" - who, in effect, did not count.
9. Which of these does NOT border Lebanon?

Answer: Afghanistan

Lebanon borders only two countries - Syria and Israel.
10. Which of these famous figures is NOT of Lebanese descent?

Answer: Tom Daschle

There are 3 million Lebanese living in America, according to www.freelebanon.org. Tom Daschle is from South Dakota.
