Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Body in the Library", which hotel was Ruby Keene a dance hostess at?

Answer: The Majestic

This is only the second full length novel to feature Miss Jane Marple. It takes place in St. Mary Mead and the surrounding area. Miss Marple helps her good friend, Dolly Bantry, when a dead body of a young woman is found in the library of Gossington Hall.
2. In "Five Little Pigs", how many years had it been, since Caroline Crale was convicted?

Answer: 16 years

This is also known as "Go Back for Murder" and is another novel based around a nursery rhyme. Caroline Crale was convicted of murdering her artist husband, Amyas Crale. Caroline's daughter, Carla Lemarchant, comes to Poirot, and asks him to try to clear her mother's name.
3. In "The Moving Finger", whom does Miss Marple come to stay with?

Answer: Reverend Dane Calthrop

Bunch Harmon will appear in "A Murder is Announced" while Florence is Miss Emily Barton's faithful maid. There are anonymous letters in a quiet English village. The Reverend is married to Maud Dane Calthrop. The letters also accuse the newcomers in the village - Jerry and Joanna Burton - to be lovers and not brother and sister as they claim.
4. In "Towards Zero", what sport was Neville Strange good at?

Answer: Tennis

This novel sees the last appearance of Superintendent Battle. He has to find out who killed an old woman with no apparent motive. The woman was bludgeoned with a metal knob from an old Victorian fender.
5. In "Death comes as the End", what year, approximately, was the novel set?

Answer: 2000 B.C.

The story is unique; it is based in Egypt and set four thousand years ago. Imhotep has recently married the beautiful concubine, Nofret. Nofret is found dead at the edge of the cliff, and many more deaths occur during the novel.
6. In "Sparkling Cyanide", what does rosemary, the herb, stand for?

Answer: Remembrance

This novel was also known as "Remembered Death". The story features Colonel Johnny Race in his last appearance in a book. Rosemary Barton dies at a dinner party to celebrate her birthday from ingesting cyanide. Her husband organises a dinner party, a year later, with the same guests, to remember Rosemary. It all goes wrong when somebody else dies in exactly the same way as Rosemary did.
7. In "The Hollow", how was Doctor John Christow murdered?

Answer: Gunshot wound

This novel is also known as "Murder After Hours". Doctor Christow was unhappily married to Gerda Christow; he was in love with Henrietta Savernake, the sculptress. The Christows go to stay with Lady Lucy Angkatell, who is having a house party. John is later found in the Angkatell's swimming pool, dead. Agatha regretted adding Poirot in this novel.
8. In "Taken at the Flood", what is Doctor Lionel Cloade addicted to?

Answer: Morphine

This novel is also known as "There Is A Tide", and features Hercule Poirot. Captain Robert Underhay married young widow Rosaleen Hunter, and then was killed in a bomb explosion. Rosaleen has now got a large fortune. Most of Captain Underhay's immediate family are desperate for money and come to Rosaleen for help. Rosaleen's brother, David Hunter, is much shrewder than his sister however.

There are two murders in this book.
9. In "Crooked House", where did Charles Hayward and Sophia Leonides meet?

Answer: Egypt

This was one of Agatha Christie's personal favourites. Lots of people disagreed with the choice of murderer. This is another book that follows a nursery rhyme - this time "There was a crooked man ... ". Rich Aristide Leonides - Sophia's grandfather - dies in mysterious circumstances. Seeing as Charles' father works at Scotland Yard, he is able to find out a lot about the circumstances.

At the end of the novel, Charles and Sophia plan to marry.
10. In "A Murder is Announced", where did Rudi Scherz work, as a receptionist, in England?

Answer: Royal Spa Hotel

All the choices have been mentioned in Christie novels. There is a announcement in the "Chipping Cleghorn Express" that there will be a murder at Little Paddocks at 6.30 pm. This is news to the owner of Little Paddocks, Miss Blacklock. Various residents of Chipping Cleghorn descend on Little Paddocks at the appointed time, and sure enough, there is a hold up.

The "game" goes wrong when the gunman is killed. Miss Marple comes to stay with the Reverend Harmon and his wife, Bunch, to investigate.
