Bob Dylan wrote and sang the song for the 1973 film, "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid". It reached number 12 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Guns N' Roses recorded their version for the soundtrack of the 1990 film, "Days of Thunder". Other notable artists who made the song their cover were Eric Clapton, The Grateful Dead and U2.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice wrote the music and lyrics for the 1970 stage musical "Jesus Christ Superstar". Both Yvonne Elliman and Helen Reddy recorded the song in the same year, but it was Elliman who sang it on stage. Her version reached number 28 on the US Billboard Hot 100, whereas Reddy's version did slightly better at number 13.
3. Los Lobos recorded a popular cover version of "La Bamba" in 1987, but which male artist sang the original twenty nine years earlier?

Answer: Ritchie Valens

Who could forget both versions of this Mexican folksong, originally recorded by Ritchie Valens in 1958. His version reached number 22 on the US Billboard Hot 100, but the group Los Lobos did much better and peaked at number one. Their version was recorded for the 1987 film "La Bamba".

The lyrics start "Para bailar la bamba, se necesita una poca de gracia, una poca de gracia para mi para ti", which roughly translates into English, "In order to dance the bamba, a little humour is needed, a little humour for me and for you".
4. "War" was a single on the 1984 album "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, but who was its original singer in 1970?

Answer: Edwin Starr

Barrett Strong and Norman Whitfield wrote the song in 1969 as a protest against the Vietnam War. Edwin Starr reached the number one spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 a year later. The Temptations and Bruce Springsteen also made cover versions, but it was British band, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, who recorded it on their first ever album, "Welcome to the Pleasuredome".

This album also included the singles "Relax" and "The Power of Love".
5. 2001 saw the musical "Moulin Rouge!" released in cinemas which included a cover version of "The Show Must Go On". Who performed the original in 1991?

Answer: Queen

"Moulin Rouge" featured a whole host of cover songs, including "Material Girl" by Madonna, and "Roxanne" by The Police. "The Show Must Go On" was sung by Nicole Kidman and Jim Broadbent after Kidman's character found out she was dying. The original song by Queen was written by Brian May and was released six weeks before Freddie Mercury died of AIDS.

It reached number 16 on the UK Singles Chart.
6. Dutch band Kane recorded a cover of "With or Without You" in 2000 but which popular Irish group sang the original in 1987?

Answer: U2

Dutch band Kane was formed in 1998 and they released "With or Without You" in 2000 on their U2 tribute album of the same name. It reached number 22 on the Dutch Charts. The original released by U2 appeared on their third album "The Joshua Tree" and the single reached international acclaim, reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, and number four on the UK Singles Chart.

Other cover versions have been made by Heaven 17, Keane and classical crossover singer, Jackie Evancho.
7. Many artists have covered the song "Love Hurts" including Nazareth in 1975 and Rod Stewart in 2006. Who sang the original in 1961?

Answer: Everly Brothers

The rock ballad was written by Boudleaux Bryant, who with his wife also wrote another Everly Brothers favourite, "All I Have to Do Is Dream". "Love Hurts" was never released by the Everly Brothers as a single, but appeared on their album, "A Date with The Everly Brothers".

The Nazareth cover peaked at number 23 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and the Rod Stewart version appeared on his covers album, "Still the Same... Great Rock Classics of Our Time".
8. "Abracadabra" was a cover version released by Sugar Ray in 1999 but which group performed the original in 1982?

Answer: Steve Miller Band

Steve Miller, who wrote the song and released it in 1982, was said to have been inspired to write the song after a meeting he had with Diana Ross. The single reached the number one spot in several countries, including Australia, Canada and the US. American rock band Sugar Ray used the cover version on their 1999 album, "14:59", which also included the singles "Every Morning" and "Someday".
9. "Love Is All Around" was a cover version for Scottish band Wet Wet Wet in 1994, but which British group sang and performed the original in 1967?

Answer: The Troggs

The original song was written by Reg Presley for The Troggs and reached number seven on the US Billboard Hot 100. It is said to have been inspired from a song by The Joy Strings called "Love That's All Around". The cover version by Wet Wet Wet appeared on the 1994 film, "Four Weddings and a Funeral".

The screenwriter for that film, Richard Curtis, also included a parody version of the song called "Christmas Is All Around" in his 2003 film, "Love Actually".

Other covers on the album included "Baby Can I Hold You" (Tracy Chapman), "No Matter What" (Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman), and "Words" (Bee Gees). "Father and Son" was a popular song written by Cat Stevens and appeared on his 1970 album, "Tea for the Tillerman". "When the Going Gets Tough" was written by Billy Ocean in 1985 and reached number two on the US Billboard Hot 100.
