Her full name is Dorothy Snowden Williams. She was born in Mount Kisco, New York, and is the youngest, having two older sisters. The name "Dar" came from the inability of one of her older sisters to pronounce "Dorothy" correctly.

After being born in Mount Kisco, Dar spent her childhood in Chappaqua, New York, raised by parents she has described as "liberal and loving."
