Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Vocalist Phil Lynott was born in which country?

Answer: England

Lynott was a proud and passionate Irishman, from Dublin, but he was actually born in West Bromwich, Birmingham. His mother later moved to Manchester, where young Phil started attending primary school, but due to allegations of racism, she thought it safer for him to be raised by her parents in Dublin, and so he moved to his mother's native land, while she remained in England.
2. The first incarnation of Thin Lizzy was a trio, featuring Lynott with drummer Brian Downey and which guitarist?

Answer: Eric Bell

Eric Bell was a founding member of Thin Lizzy, and remained with the band until 1973, appearing on the band's first three albums as well as co writing the fan favourite "The Rocker" (1973) which was used as the closing song at Lizzy concerts for many years. John Du Cann is best known for his work with Atomic Rooster and Andrew Latimer is a founding member of Camel.
3. In 1974, who replaced Gary Moore as guitarist for the band?

Answer: Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson

1974s "Nightlife" album, featuring tracks such as "Still In Love With You" and "Sha La La" was the first to feature the twin lead guitar attack for which Lizzy would become famous. This sound influenced many bands such as the Darkness, Iron Maiden and Velvet Revolver, although it was probably first used to good effect by the Yardbirds when Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck traded licks.
4. Released in 1978, and still considered one of the best live rock albums ever, what is the name of the classic Thin Lizzy double live album?

Answer: Live And Dangerous

"Live And Dangerous" was not a single concert recording but instead was a collection of the best performances from the band's 1976-1977 tour, and features tracks recorded in London, Philadelphia and Toronto. "Dancing In The Moonlight", appears on the album and was originally a track from their "Bad Reputation"(1977) studio album. "Just a Collection of Antiques and Curios" was a 1970 live album from the Strawbs and "Live and Improvised" was a live album by Blood, Sweat And Tears released in 1991, although it was recorded in 1975.
5. What was Thin Lizzy's highest placing UK chart single?

Answer: Whiskey In The Jar

All of the choices were top ten UK hits for the band, but it was "Whiskey In The Jar" from 1972 which got highest, reaching number six. "The Boys Are Back In Town" (1976) reached number eight and gave them their biggest USA hit, while "Killer On The Loose" (1980) got to number ten and "Waiting For An Alibi" (1979) went one better, peaking at number nine. "Whiskey In The Jar" is a traditional Irish folk song, dating back to the 17th century, which has also been recorded by the Dubliners with the Pogues in 1990 and Metallica, who won a Grammy for their 1998 version of it.
6. Which former Thin Lizzy guitarist had a solo UK hit in 1983 with "Bird Of Paradise"?

Answer: Snowy White

White was with the band between 1980 and 1982, having attracted attention after performing with Pink Floyd as a supplementary guitarist on their mammoth "Animals" tour of 1977. He recorded tracks such as "Killer On The Loose" and "Renegade" with Thin Lizzy, appearing on the "Chinatown" (1980) and "Renegade" (1981) albums before going solo and scoring a UK number six with "Bird Of Paradise", which has become his signature song, much like "Parisienne Walkways" (1978) became the signature song for Gary Moore. White gets signature song bragging rights though as Moore only managed to reach number eight in UK charts.
7. "Fighting" (1975) was the first Thin Lizzy album to chart in UK and had as its opening track, "Rosalie", a cover version of whose song from 1973?

Answer: Bob Seger

Seger wrote "Rosalie" and included it on his 1973 album "Back in '72" as well as releasing it as a single, although it failed to chart. Thin Lizzy's 1975 cover also failed to chart when released as a single, but went on to become a firm fan favourite, being played at the majority of live shows.
8. Which Thin Lizzy track is played at Irish rugby matches and was briefly used by Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan in their 2012 presidential campaign?

Answer: The Boys Are Back In Town

"The Boys Are Back In Town" (1976) from the "Jailbreak" album of the same year is classic Thin Lizzy, although its origins are unclear, with some believing it is about Manchester crime syndicate, "The Quality Street Gang" and others believing it is about the band's times in Manchester staying at the hotel owned by Phil Lynott's mother. Whatever the origin, it is a great track, perfect as an introduction to the Irish team at Lansdowne Road, home of Irish rugby.

Not so welcome was it's use by Romney and Ryan, and objections were made by Lynott's mother, Philomena, his widow, Caroline and his band mate Scott Gorham, as they didn't feel Lynott would have ever wanted his music used for political purposes, with Philomena particularly objecting to Romney's opposition to gay marriage being on odds with her son's view on the subject.
9. "The hero..rode a white horse..across the desert..to where his woman was" is the spoken introduction to Thin Lizzy track, "The Hero And The Madman" (1973). Which Canadian British DJ spoke these words?

Answer: Kid Jensen

"The Hero And The Madman" was a track from the band's 1973 album "Vagabonds of the Western World", which wasn't a great selling album for them, but did start to hint at the sound for which they would become known, with the appearance of "The Rocker". "The Hero And The Madman" was more of a jazz rock number, and is really notable only for the appearance of Jensen, who was at the time working on pirate station, Radio Luxembourg.
10. Although Thin Lizzy still tour, they have not recorded under that name since Lynott's death. Under what name do they record?

Answer: Black Star Riders

Black Star Riders released their first album, "All Hell Breaks Loose" in 2013 and had chart success in UK and Scandinavia, which has been repeated with the follow up albums, "The Killer Instinct" (2015) and "Heavy Fire" (2017). The albums all feature the talented guitar work of Scott Gorham, who was a member of Lynott era Thin Lizzy for almost a decade.
