Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the early and mid-fifties, choose the primary broadcasters used for the TV games.

Answer: Red Barber, Connie Desmond, Vin Scully, Andre Baruch

One of these famed telecasters later went to work for the hated Yankees.
2. On what channel were the Dodger games broadcast in New York?

Answer: Ch. 9

Channel 9 was the Cable before there was Cable. You could have seen old movies, old police shows, and all the New York Sports teams (in season) for free!
3. What was the name of the pre-game show, aimed at the kids, and appearing before every home game?

Answer: Happy Feltons' Knothole Gang

Happy was a rotund featured actor who also appeared on many of the "Golden Age" dramas of the day. The show featured interviews with the players and baseball instruction.
4. One of the announcers was plucked directly from Fordham University without previous professional experience, and became a famous play-by-play star later in his career. Who was this?

Answer: Vince Scully

Red Barber overheard young Scully on the Fordham radio station, and the rest was history.
5. What was the name of the street into which Duke Snider would hit most of his "homers", a fairly long and well-known Brooklyn thoroughfare?

Answer: Bedford Avenue

It's still there and runs through almost all of Brooklyn in a north to south direction.
6. This Brooklyn manager never wore a uniform. He did his business in a business suit. Who was it?

Answer: Burt Shotton

One of the only baseball managers to act so. Another famous exception being Connie Mack of the Philadelphia Athletics.
7. Who became the Dodgers version of Mariano Rivera because he was a practically lights out closer and one of the first great relievers?

Answer: Clem Labine

He was the unsung hero of "Dem Bums", rarely blowing a save, and played for the Dodgers from 1950-1960.
8. What famous Brooklyn park was Ebbets Field next to?

Answer: Prospect Park

A huge Inner-City Park second only to Central in New York city.
9. What stood where Ebbets Field was today?

It's quite a large and imposing apartment building with absolutely no trace of the ballpark. Ebbets was opened in 1913, with the last game being played in 1957, then torn down in 1960.
10. Which Brooklyn Dodger won the first Cy Young award?

Answer: Don Newcombe

The first Cy Young award was given out in 1956. Newcombe went 27-7 in the season.
