Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the cursed goat?

Answer: Murphy

Sianis' goat, Sinova (sometimes known as Murphy), was not allowed entrance to Wrigley Field for game four of the 1945 World Series because "the goat smelled". Therefore, Sianis cursed the Cubs, supposedly keeping them from making it to the World Series since 1945.
2. The Cub fortunes would change after trading a future Hall of Famer to the St. Louis Cardinals for a fading pitcher named Ernie Broglio. Who was the future Hall of Famer?

Answer: Lou Brock

In early 1964, the Cubs sent Brock to St. Louis, mainly to get Broglio, and his career went down the tubes, and Brock helped the Cardinals win the World Series later in that season.
3. Aside from a billy goat, another animal jinxed the Cubs in September of 1969. A black cat ran in front of the Cubs dugout in a game at which stadium?

Answer: Shea Stadium

With Ron Santo standing on deck, a black cat scampered on to the field and walked all around him and in front of the Cubs dugout. Anyone who believes in curses believes that this did a number on the Cubs, who would lose their lead in the division and keep themselves out of the postseason.
4. In the early 1980s, the Cubs found a new GM to help turn the team around. Who was he?

Answer: Dallas Green

Green and his 'new tradition' made the Cubs contenders in the tough National League by acquiring many stars and some future Hall of Famers like Ryne Sandberg and Andre Dawson.
5. The Cubs were just one game away from breaking the curse in 1984. To whom did they blow the NLCS lead and the National League pennant to?

Answer: San Diego Padres

The Cubs had a two games to none lead in the best-of-five series, but their luck faded in the shadows of San Diego. The Padres, who were led by Steve Garvey and Tony Gwynn, won the last three games to win the series.
6. Who was pitching for the Cubs when Leon Durham let a ground ball roll through his legs to lose the Cubs lead in game five of the NLCS?

Answer: Rick Sutcliffe

Two years before Buckner, there was 'Bull'. Leon Durham let a slow roller go under his glove, allowing the Padres to score the tying runs and eventually win the game. Sutcliffe, whose Cy Young award and a 16-1 Cubs record helped the team get this far, was on the mound at the time and took the loss.
7. Which manager did the Cubs hire in 2003 to help the Cubs try to break the curse?

Answer: Dusty Baker

Dusty was an obvious choice. He was not just a good manager fresh off a National League Pennant in 2002, but he was also a 'magic man'. He spread a secret substance all over the infield at Wrigley to try to magically spur his new team to a title.
8. Steve Bartman's 'interference' did not lose game six of the 2003 NLCS, but it started the inevitable collapse. Whose error later in the inning truly cost the Cubs the inning and the game?

Answer: Alex Gonzalez

With Bartman may have started the bad karma, Cub shortstop Alex Gonzalez botched a potentional double-play ball that led the Marlins to score 8 runs in the inning to win game six of the 2003 NLCS. Although he led NL shortstops in fielding that year, he would give up a season of great fielding just to make that one play.
9. The Cubs former owner, the Tribune Company, sold off the team at the end of the 2007 season, leaving Cub fans to hope for a change in luck with a change in leadership. Who did the Tribune Company sell the Cubs to?

Answer: Sam Zell

Zell bought the Cubs on December 20, 2007, but his intentions have always been to resell the team for a profit.
10. Since kicking the original goat out of Wrigley Field in 1945, the Cubs still have not accepted another goat into Wrigley Field.

Answer: False

Obviously, the Cubs have tried many things to break the curse. They have let goats into Wrigley Field, brought goats to other baseball stadiums, and they even blew up the infamous Bartman ball from the 2003 NLCS. However, according to three interviews with Sam Sianis, William Sianis' nephew-in-law, the Curse of the famed Billy Goat can only be dispelled by the Chicago Cubs organization by showing a true sincere fondness for goats, allowing them into Wrigley Field because they like them, and not simply for publicity reasons.
