Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the final serial of the first season (when William Hartnell played the role of the First Doctor), what historical event did the TARDIS crew visit?

Answer: French Revolution

The Doctor intended to take Ian and Barbara back to their own time and place (London 1963) but instead landed in France during the French Revolution, more specifically, during the Reign of Terror, and as is usual for the historical stories, dressed up in period-appropriate clothing. Historical characters that appeared in the story included Maximilien Robespierre and Napoleon Bonaparte.
2. In "The Abominable Snowmen" and "The Web of Fear", the Second Doctor and his companions met the creature seen to the left. Who was among these companions?

Answer: Victoria

The Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria were part of the TARDIS crew both times the Second Doctor encountered the abominable snowmen. During the first encounter, the Great Intelligence used the yeti to attack a monastery in Tibet. In the Doctor's second encounter, set about forty years later, the Great Intelligence once again used the yeti-- this time in the London Underground-- in order to conquer England.

The Great Intelligence was intended to be a villain that would replace the Daleks as most popular "Doctor Who" villain (the Daleks being given a rest so that Terry Nation, the man who created the Daleks, could produce a spin-off that would feature them); however, while the Great Intelligence was liked, they didn't become a recurring antagonist.
3. During the Third Doctor's era, several new enemies were encountered. Who was not among these aliens? (Note: The Doctor did encounter these aliens, but it was not during the Third Doctor's era in which they made their debut appearance.)

Answer: Ice Warriors

In "The Curse of Peladon" and its sequel "The Monster of Peladon", the Doctor encountered the Ice Warriors, an alien species from Mars. Although this was not the first time the Doctor encountered them (that honor goes to the Second Doctor serial appropriately titled "The Ice Warriors"), it was the first the Ice Warriors were presented as allies and not enemies.
4. What was the name of the sweets that the Fourth Doctor was known for carrying in his pockets?

Answer: Jelly Babies

Although the Fourth Doctor wasn't the first doctor to have jelly babies (that honor goes to the Second Doctor in the serial "The Dominators"), the Fourth Doctor was the doctor most closely associated with jelly babies. He first offered one near the end of his debut story ("Robot") to his companion Sarah Jane Smith.
5. As revealed in "The Caves of Androzani", why did the Fifth Doctor wear the vegetable seen to the left?

Answer: To detect gas the Doctor was allergic to

The Doctor first wore celery on his jacket in his debut story, "Castrovalva". However, it wasn't until his swan song that he revealed why he wore the celery. If it turned purple, then there was gas in the area that the Doctor was allergic to. Interestingly, the celery never turned purple. One reason might have been that the Doctor never encountered those types of gas.

Another reason might have been because the celery came from an artificial setting. In "Castrovalva", the city was an illusion created by the Master.

In "Enlightenment" the Doctor replaced the celery with one from a space ship created by the Black Guardian.
6. What historical figure did the Sixth Doctor and Peri meet in "The Mark of the Rani"?

Answer: George Stephenson

The Doctor and Peri met George Stephenson, inventor of the steam locomotive. This was the first time a historical character appeared since "The Gunfighters" nearly twenty years earlier, and the first time it happened since the end of the era of the show in which historical stories (stories with no science fiction elements apart from the Doctor and the TARDIS) appeared.
Stephenson appeared for a meeting of intellectual minds that occurred during the Luddite riots.
7. In the final episode of the classic series "Survival", people from Perivale were taken to a planet where over time they would resemble the animal seen in the photo. Which of the Seventh Doctor's enemies was also taken to this planet?

Answer: The Master

Some time before the Seventh Doctor and Ace arrived on a cheetah planet, the Master himself was brought there by the cheetah people. They wished to survive but fighting on the planet caused destruction to the planet. After spending some time on the planet, people became cheetah people.

The Master started to become infected but he tried to fight it off and was also able to return to Earth.
8. What was the name of the Ninth Doctor's companion whose life was saved when the Doctor decided to sacrifice his own life in the two part episode "Bad Wolf" and "The Parting of the Ways"?

Answer: Rose

The Doctor had sent his companion, Rose Tyler, and the TARDIS back to Rose's own time so she would not be involved in his conflict with the Daleks. Rose wanted to save the Doctor but didn't know how to pilot the TARDIS. Remembering what the Doctor said in a previous episode about the TARDIS being alive, Rose decided to absorb the time vortex which allowed her to return to the Doctor.

However, no one was meant to experience that, and the time vortex was killing Rose. The Doctor decided to transfer the vortex from her to him in order to save her life which resulted in his regeneration.
9. The opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics was seen in what episode?

Answer: Fear Her

In "Fear Her", a young girl named Chloe Webber had the ability to draw things out of existence thanks to alien influence and it was up to the Tenth Doctor and his companion Rose to bring them back. This included everyone at the Olympic stadium, including the torch bearer. However, when the torch bearer returned, he collapsed and the Doctor had to bring the torch the rest of the way.
10. Rory's first trip in the TARDIS resulted in him (along with the Eleventh Doctor and Amy) meeting aliens that appeared similar to the mythological creature seen in the photo. Where was Rory when he met these creatures?

Answer: Venice

In "The Vampires of Venice", the Doctor took Rory and Amy to Venice, Italy in the sixteenth century where the three of them encountered an unnamed alien species that resembled vampires due to a perception filter. These aliens fled their home planet because of cracks in the universe and an alien race known as the Silence (both of which the Doctor is familiar with).

Their leader, Rosanna Calvierri, wished to save her people by biting Venetians to obtain the water in their bodies, something which the aliens needed but lacked.
