Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If Mario defeats Bowser at the end of "Super Mario Bros. 3" as Hammer Mario, how many hammers will Bowser have to be hit with in order to be beaten?

Answer: four

If you thought that Bowser could only be beaten by tricking him into butt-stomping through the floor into the abyss, you have never taken your Mario feats one step beyond. It will take four hammers to defeat Bowser. He can also be defeated with Fire Balls, but it will take many more, as they aren't nearly as powerful as hammers (which can even kill Thwomps). Bowser will fall down below the screen, just as if he had been beaten with fire in "Super Mario Bros".
2. Which of these is not an enemy Mario faces in World D-3 of "The Lost Levels"?

Answer: Goomba

There are no Goombas in World D-3. Mario would have probably been relieved to have faced so weak an enemy in that brutal stage. Mario is spammed with Bullet Bills and Hammer Bros., and not to mention Koopas on awkward ledges he must spring onto from a trampoline.
3. In "Super Paper Mario", who is the only Pixl capable of defeating an Underhand?

Answer: Barry

Barry, the optional Pixl, is the only one that can defeat these dreaded skeletal hands. The Tattle of an Underhand read: "That's an Underhand. These creepy hands try to drag the dead deeper into oblivion... If they met a living person, they would certainly try to drag him or her down too... You can't defeat them, so it's best to run...".

They are first seen attempting to make Mario's game be over in the River Twygz.
4. There are many devilishly well hidden Green Stars in "Super Mario Galaxy 2". And some have the potential to be quite deadly if they are missed. After ground-pounding through the gate to alter the gravitational forces, from where does Mario or Luigi need to jump in order to obtain the infamous Green Star 3 in the Flipsville Galaxy?

Answer: The lower right-hand corner with the crate

Mario or Luigi must take a leap of faith into the upward gravitation from the lower right-hand corner. Either they catch the Green Star- or die. Ground-pounding and/or spinning may help the Bro. catch it, but it is not required. What is required is total precision.
5. "Paper Mario" was not the only title to have a character named Mr. E. Can you name the other one?

Answer: "Mario Party Advance"

Mr. E was originally a Dryite from "Paper Mario". During the events of the game, he quite humorously mailed Miss T. a love letter. When Mario took it to her, she became nonplussed and stated she did not know him. However, due to her extreme beauty, a like occurrence was wont to happen.

A character named Mr. E, also a Toad, appeared in "Mario Party Advance". He was a true egomaniac, believing himself to be the best player of them all. Since the events of "Mario Party Advance", he has not been seen. His whereabouts are unknown. I guess you can call them a mystery. An example of when hilarity ensued in "Mario Party Advance" was when Shroomlock of Toadland Yard descried that Thwomp's door was too small to fit through. He could not fit through the door to leave his own house, therefore he fabricated the case he sent Shroomlock on, just to get a visitor.
6. Which of the following is NOT a true soap color from the "Mario Party DS" Mini-Game Soap Surfers?

Answer: Light orange

The rules of Soap Surfers are: "Knock all rivals out of the sink as you surf on the soap bar. Avoid getting knocked out before the time runs out, or be the last one standing." Soap Surfers of "Mario Party DS" fame can quite easily be compared to Bumper Balls of "Mario Party" and "Mario Party 2" fame.

It was a breath of fresh air to see an extremely similar Mini-Game to my favorite Mini-Game finally return on the DS.
7. The "Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3" level, Endless World of Yoshis, is a pretty intense level. How many Flutters (the flying Wigglers) must Yoshi get past in the first area of the level?

Answer: Thirteen

Endless World of Yoshis is the secret level that is widely considered the hardest level in the game. It is purely excruciating to 100% (that is, get every Red Coin, Special Flower, and maximum health). But the true Mario master does not quit and does not give up regardless of anything. To the true Mario master, it is the either the game or him. No matter what is thrown at him, he must conquer. To die hard completionists, it will seem easy going back and doing it again.

But not without many failures.
8. Can you complete the level title from "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island"? What's _____ Taste Like?

Answer: Gusty

Gusties are long, happy ghosts that bother Yoshi and Baby Mario in "Yoshi's Island". They later appear in the solid sequel, "Yoshi's Island DS". In addition to giving Yoshi all the vital eggs he needs, they can help him reach higher places. Gusty is also a word that means a strong, sudden wind. Coincidentally, Gusty Gulch is an area in "Paper Mario".

While there aren't any Gusties, the gulch is inhabited by another "Mario" series ghost, a hundred times more well known. It starts with a "B".
9. "Donkey Kong Country Returns" is known for its difficulty. But no challenge the game can throw at the player's feet can compare to Mirror Mode. The 4-K Jagged Jewels Temple Level on Mirror Mode can drive even the most uber-skilled, jaded gamer bananas! When Donkey Kong finally does make it to the end, what color Orb will he gleefully grab at the end?

Answer: Purple

In order for anyone to say they beat "Donkey Kong Country Returns", they must get full 200% completion. That entails completing every level in the notorious Mirror Mode. Anyone who completes Mirror Mode has my respect. But only very skilled, lifelong gamers will ever do it. An average gamer, even if he perseveres and never quits, will probably never attain it. It may be the hardest thing to do in the "Mario" universe. And quite frankly, that's what I love about the game.

Not only is it an absolute blast to play, I enjoy hearing people whine about the game's difficulty. Games these days are way too easy, and I hope "Donkey Kong Country Returns" starts a trend of bringing old-school difficulty back to the fore. How is an easy game that just hands victory over to you any different from just watching a movie?

I know easy/hard is extremely subjective, as not every gamer (I'm not even including casual gamers in this statement, as I do not even consider them gamers) has the skill of old-school gamers. I know many gamers found "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" hard... Regardless, more games such as "Donkey Kong Country Returns", which you can be proud to say you beat, need to be put out there. Mario needs new "Lost Levels".

There is no greater challenge in this challenge among challenges known as Mirror Mode than 4-K Jagged Jewels. It is not easy to explain, it simply must be experienced. Mirror Mode is also quite tough (but never Jagged Jewels tough) when Donkey takes on the Mole Train. DK will face random insta-kills. There is also the Thugly Boss fight, and many others. But Mirror Mode should at least be attempted by all. It is not easy, but the game will reward you when each level is completed in the Mode.
10. The Perfect Run is "Super Mario Galaxy 2's" final Star. How many Sentry Beams must Mario or Luigi get past in the fourth area?

Answer: four

The Perfect Run of the Grandmaster Galaxy is "Super Mario Galaxy 2's" most difficult Star. When the Perfect Run comes along, Paragoombas are replaced by Choppahs in the first area. In the fourth area, Mario or Luigi must get past four Sentry Beams. Sentry Beams shoot circular lasers at the Bros., and one hit and that's it. Back flipping may be a good idea, as the blasts will stop, because the Bro. will be too high for them to detect. However, it works better/is more likely to work as Luigi, as he goes higher.

Even if the fourth area is gotten past, the Bros. will still have two more areas to tackle, to defeat the REAL ultimate test. Many enemies, worst of all, Hammer Bros. and Boomerang Bros., will try to stop Mario or Luigi. But they are only as good as the player controlling them, and the great gamer will eventually be successful.

I personally struggled getting this Star at first, but going back it is very fun to replay and seems easy now, probably because I know it by heart. But I can't tell you how many gamer friends I know to this day who have only 241 Stars at "Super Mario Galaxy 2". They don't get any sympathy from me. Honestly, I wish dozens of the game's Stars had been like this.
