Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Not surprisingly, the game begins with a certain famous plumber. Just before we see what Mario is up to, however, some on-screen text tells us the setting of the current goings-on. Where does the game say things are taking place?

Answer: "In the skies above Peach's castle"

As the curtain rises on "Super Mario Odyssey," the eponymous hero is high above the elegant castle of Princess Peach, but he doesn't exactly have time to enjoy the view at the moment. As Mario has found to be the case over the years, there just isn't much peace and quiet to be had on the giant airship of an evil king. Next time, perhaps the plumber can hire a nice hot-air balloon.

It would certainly be more conducive to a serene environment.
2. Two other characters also feature in the opening scene, a longtime nemesis and a fair-haired lady. Mario and Bowser are in the middle of a battle, as the Princess looks on. What does Bowser want with her this time, anyway?

Answer: He plans to force her to marry him

Bowser could write a book on all the different ways to capture a princess. He always seems to change his mind about what to actually do once he's nabbed her. In the storyline of the original "Super Mario Bros.," he needed to keep her prisoner because she alone could break the spell he'd cast on the people of the Mushroom Kingdom.

This time around, however, no longer content to simply kidnap Princess Peach and hold her hostage like he's done in the past, Bowser has decided it's high time the two of them get hitched -- whether she likes it or not!
3. Bowser gets the upper hand and bests Mario, then knocks him off the ship. What iconic item of Mario's is lost in the process, and how?

Answer: His hat, shredded by the airship's propeller blades

Mario lost a star and one of his gloves (and two other belongings) way back in "Luigi's Mansion," but in this story, it's the trademark red hat that gets ruined. With all the coins he's always finding, you'd think he would have invested in a few spare hats over the last three decades!
4. After nearly falling to his doom, Mario wakes in a town of grey and gloom. He soon meets and agrees to team up with one of the local residents. What is the name of Mario's newfound ally?

Answer: Cappy

Mario makes the acquaintance of Cappy, who belongs to a race of hat-shaped creatures. Seeing that Mario isn't one of Bowser's minions, Cappy suggests that he and the plumber join forces. As it turns out, the princess isn't the only one who was kidnapped -- Bowser has also taken Cappy's little sister.
5. Mario's new friend gives him the ability to "capture" various people and animals he encounters. Which of these is NOT one of the effects of capturing a character?

Answer: Mario can talk to other characters of the same species as the one he captured.

By tossing Cappy at the intended target, Mario can assume control of that creature's body. This also enables him to take advantage of any unique power or ability that character may possess (e.g., being able to fly), and the target does indeed gain Mario's mustache and hat.

He can walk the walk, but he can't talk the talk, however -- while transformed, Mario cannot speak or understand the language of whatever enemy or animal species he is possessing.
6. Now for something a little different. The first animal Mario can capture bears a striking resemblance to an animated, singing one that first appeared in 1955 in a Warner Bros. "Merrie Melodies" cartoon short. Which of these animals fits the bill?

Answer: A frog with a top-hat

While a fedora-wearing dog and sombrero-sporting sheep do in fact appear elsewhere in the game, the first kingdom's local wildlife mainly features top-hat-wearing little frogs, which Mario can capture and use to jump to extraordinary heights. The Warner Bros. cartoon in question is "One Froggy Evening," which featured an amphibian, complete with top hat and cane, doing a vaudeville-style song-and-dance routine.
7. As Mario makes his way through the first kingdom, he'll no doubt notice its decidedly Londonesque quality and distinctive architecture. As he traverses the unusual town and takes in the sights, which of these structures will Mario NOT find there?

Answer: Monocle Monument

The first kingdom's ambiance seems inspired by traditional English design, and many of its structures call to mind a dignified, old-fashioned English gentleman. Glasses Bridge is shaped like a pair of opera glasses, while Top-Hat Tower's design needs no explanation.

The Sometimes Bridge, which connects the tower to the town's main plaza, is so called because it expands or contracts as needed, with the flick of a switch. "Monocle Monument" simply doesn't exist, even if it does sound like a fitting spectacle.
8. When he comes back for a return visit to the first kingdom, Mario can look through a large, pedestal-mounted telescope. As he enjoys the lovely glow of the full moon, however, something quite peculiar passes in front of it. What out-of-place person or thing is just visible in the night sky?

Answer: A taxi

With the help of the telescope, Mario can see many things, including migrating birds and the distant, fog-shrouded city skyline. As amusing as they'd be to see, especially in a Mario game, there aren't any magical nannies, carnival animals or floating houses (besides, each of those have already been done by Disney).

But the strange thing he will spot is, indeed, a taxi. It's not flying purely on its own power -- it's tethered to a propeller-driven ship -- but it's still a sight to behold!
9. While looking for a path to a place called Cascade Kingdom, Mario has a run-in with four nasty, rabbit-like characters, the Broodals. According to a brochure Mario reads, they work as a group, and each of them has a specific area of responsibility. What are their four stated duties?

Answer: Pyrotechnics, entertainer, bouncer and client relations

This quartet of thugs would be best described as evil wedding-planners, hired by Bowser to make sure that the upcoming wedding ceremony would be memorable, exciting and free of problems, especially in the form of interfering plumbers. Judging by their four specialties, it sounds like the Broodals have pretty fancy festivities planned for the occasion.
10. Mario finally knows where to find a reliable means of transportation. Precisely what kind of vessel does Mario's partner tell him that they're seeking?

Answer: "An old airship"

Cappy remarks that though his own kingdom has many aircraft, they've all been rendered unusable for the time being, since Bowser attacked the kingdom and damaged the flying fleet. However, continues Cappy, somewhere in the adjacent kingdom should be an old, but still-functional, airship, so the partners set out to find the very aptly named Odyssey.
