First Names H-J Trivia Questions

1. This John was king of England from 1199 until 1216. But what was his nickname?

From Quiz
Johns

Answer: Lackland

King John of England is famous for two things in English history. Firstly his signing of the Magna carta, which meant the loss of power for the king given to the barons. He also managed to lose the crown jewels while travelling back to London.

2. The English King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215. Where did the signing take place?

From Quiz John Who?

Answer: Runnymede

King John was a very unpopular monarch. He had lost most of England's land in France to Philip II of Spain. His ambition to regain these lands led to abuse of his feudal privileges, and excessive taxation of the barons. All of this led to an uprising of the barons who forced John to sign the Magna Carta (which is Latin for great charter). The Magna Carta gave protection to the church, and the barons were less open to unreasonable taxation. This was not meant by King John to be a sign of surrender, but only a time buying appeasement strategy. Aspects of it are regarded as fundamental to the British constitution, especially the requirement that the king (government) is subject to the laws of the country and the right to a fair trial without which they cannot be punished by the courts.

3. Which "H" Prime Minister disappeared while in office?

From Quiz Who am I? HAROLD or HARRY.

Answer: Harold Holt

Harold Holt (1908-1967) was the 17th Prime Minister of Australia and served from January 26, 1966 - December 17, 1967. He disappeared while swimming and was last seen swimming, then being dragged under a wave, and was never seen again. Searchers failed to find his body in the Portsea area in the state of Victoria. A memorial service was held in Melbourne on December 22, 1967 and was attended by US President, Lyndon Johnson, British Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, Charles, Prince of Wales and a number of dignitaries from Asia. Harold Wilson (1916-1995) was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on two occasions from 1964-1970 and 1974-1976. Harry Atkinson (1831-1892) was the 10th Premier of New Zealand on four separate occasions during the 19th century. Harold Macmillan (1894-1986) was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1957-1963.

4. The title of this quiz "Can I Call You Joe?" is a reference to which politician? Hint: It was Sarah Palin who said the quote.

From Quiz Can I Call You Joe?

Answer: Joe Biden

Sarah Palin whispered this to Joe Biden when they were both Vice Presidential nominees during the 2008 Election. She had asked him if she could call him Joe, while they were shaking hands before they debated. Gwen Ifill, the debate moderator, later revealed that she had never heard Palin say that famous line even though it happened right in front of her. Joe Biden would eventually go on to become the 47th Vice President in January 2009. Prior to that, he served as a senator from Delaware for 36 years and chaired the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee during some controversial and tough Supreme Court nominee hearings.

Her image appears on several Swedish bank notes, and she even has a Canadian island named after her. St Bridget was born and died in the 14th century- she founded the Bridgettine Order of nuns. 7. This Jane was born in London, U.K. in 1934. As an anthropologist she became a world-renowned expert on one particular primate in Tanzania. What is her last name?

From Quiz Jane's the Name: but which one am I?

Answer: Goodall

She was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2004. Apparently her love for these animals, which are so fascinating to humans, started when she was given a toy chimp as a child. Her parents thought it an inappropriate gift, but how wrong were they!

8. Massachusetts. Bay of Pigs. Assassination. Where's the John?

From Quiz Where's the John?

Answer: Kennedy

The three clues: Massachusetts: John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts on May 29th, 1917. He attended Harvard (in Cambridge, MA), served as Congressman for the 11th Congressional district (of Massachusetts) from 1946 to 1952, and then as Senator of Massachusetts from 1952 until 1960, when he won the presidency of the United States. Bay of Pigs: During his tenure as president, JFK authorized an invasion of Cuba by the CIA supported Brigade 2506, which occurred on April 17th, 1961. The intent was to facilitate the overthrow of Fidel Castro's government alongside the Cuban Democratic Revolutionary Front. Over 1,400 troops landed on the beach in the Bay of Pigs (south coast of Cuba), but the invasion failed, leading to stronger ties between Cuba and the USSR and eventually, the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Assassination: On November 22nd, 1963, JFK was assassinated in Dallas, Texas while being driven in the presidential motorcade. The assassin (conspiracy theories aside) was Lee Harvey Oswald, who was himself assassinated two days later by Jack Ruby.

From Quiz You Know Hugh

Answer: Hugh Downs

With his easy-going manner and charm, Hugh Downs has been in the public eye since his first televised news broadcast in 1945. Hugh has acted in TV sitcoms as well as films. 11. Known as "Cactus Jack," which Texas politician served as the US Speaker of the House from 1931-33 and as US Vice President from 1933-1941? He was once euphemistically quoted as saying the Vice Presidency was "not worth a bucket of warm spit."

From Quiz Jack of All Trades

Answer: John Nance Garner

Garner (1868-1967) was a Texas "politico" of the (really) old school, having been initially elected to the Texas legislature in 1898. By 1932 he had served in the US House of Representatives for 28 years and had aspirations to higher political office, running for President against Franklin Roosevelt. In a classic example of compromise ticket-building at the Democratic Convention that year, Garner was given the Vice Presidential spot in order to secure FDR's nomination and eventual election. Garner and FDR did not see eye-to-eye on many key issues and programs: permissible labor union tactics, New Deal deficit spending, Supreme Court "packing," and various taxation issues. Garner's relationship with FDR gradually soured, and he actually ran again for president in 1940, although Roosevelt easily won renomination to an unprecedented third term. Garner was replaced on the ticket and as Vice President in 1940-1941 by Henry Wallace.
