Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of a city in Quebec that lies across the river from Ottawa, Canada's national capital?

Answer: Gatineau

Gatineau was first established as an electoral district in 1947. The current city of Gatineau was formed in 2002 after combining the original Gatineau with four other communities (Hull, Buckingham, Aylmer and Masson-Angers). Gatineau sits along the Ottawa River, opposite the city of Ottawa, which is located in the province of Ontario.

There is debate as to the origin of the name Gatineau, which is also the name of a river that cuts through the city and empties into the Ottawa River. Some believe the name came from a native tribe while others believe it was the name of a fur trader who allegedly drowned in the river.
2. Which of these is the name of a major river that flows through southern Quebec?

Answer: St. Lawrence River

The St. Lawrence River flows from southwest to northeast. It originates at Lake Ontario and forms a natural border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the American state of New York. The St. Lawrence River continues through southern Quebec where it eventually empties out to the Atlantic Ocean via the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The St. Lawrence River is an important trade route as it gives sea vessels from the Atlantic Ocean access to the Great Lakes Region.
3. The Haskell Free Library was built on the border between Quebec and which American state?

Answer: Vermont

The Haskell Free Library and Opera House was completed in 1904. The northern half of the building is located in the town of Stanstead, Quebec, while the southern half of the building is located in the town of Derby Line, Vermont. When tourists visit the library, a black line inside of it shows where the border actually lies. Pedestrians from Canada can walk over the border in order to enter the library, as the main entrance is on the American side, but they are expected to go right back after visiting. Customs agents do patrol the area and will take action against those who venture too far. Those not visiting the library are expected to use official border crossing stations.
4. There is a city in Quebec named Val-d'Or. What does its name mean in English?

Answer: Valley of Gold

Val d'Or (Valley of Gold) is located in western Quebec and its name comes from the fact that gold was discovered in the region in 1923. One of Val d'Or's main attractions is the Cite de l'Or (City of Gold), a place where people can tour an old underground gold mine which closed down in 1985.
5. Which of these is the name of a village located along the Hudson Bay in northern Quebec?

Answer: Ivujivik

The village of Ivujivik sits near close to an area where the Hudson Bay and the Hudson Strait (a waterway between Quebec and Baffin Island) meet. It is the northernmost populated area in the province. Ivujivik lies near the same latitude as the city of Fairbanks, Alaska.

In 2016, Ivujivik reported a population of just over 400 people, who are mostly of Inuit descent. The name comes from a local Inuit word that translates to "place where ice accumulates because of strong currents".
6. Mont D'Iberville is considered the highest point in both Quebec and what neighboring province?

Answer: Newfoundland and Labrador

Mont D'Iberville (aka Mount Caubvick) is located in the Torngat Mountains which lie on the border between Quebec and the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Mont D'Iberville/Mount Caubvick is considered the highest point of both provinces, with a total height of 1,652 m (5,420 ft), though the peak reaches its highest on the Labrador side.

The mountain received the name Mont D'Iberville first, by the Quebec government in 1971. It received its second name, Mount Caubvick, from the Newfoundland and Labrador government in 1981.
7. Which of the following places is a popular vacation destination in Quebec for skiers?

Answer: Mont-Tremblant

Mont-Tremblant is a city situated within the Laurentian Mountains, which stretch across southern Quebec. The name was derived from an Algonquin phrase that means "trembling mountain". The town has become a popular ski destination. Mont Tremblant Ski Resort first opened in 1939.

This was the resort where actress Natasha Richardson (1963-2009), wife of Liam Neeson, was involved in a fatal skiing accident.
8. Three of these cities can be found in Quebec. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Deux-Villes

Trois-Rivieres, Baie-Comeau and Sept-Iles all sit alongside the St. Lawrence River in Quebec. Trois-Rivieres is located between Montreal and Quebec City. Its name means "Three Rivers" in English. The city of Baie-Comeau lies further to the northeast on the opposite side of Quebec City.

It was named after a Canadian naturalist named Napoleon-Alexandre Comeau. Sept-Iles lies the furthest to the northeast along the St. Lawrence River and its name means "Seven Islands" in English. There is no city named Deux-Villes in Quebec.
9. What is the name of an iconic hotel that was built in Quebec City in 1892?

Answer: Chateau Frontenac

Chateau Frontenac was completed on December 18, 1894 in the historical neighborhood of Old Quebec. It was designed by American architect Bruce Price, who designed the hotel to look like a building from Renaissance-era France. The hotel was named after Louis de Buade de Frontenac (1622-1698), who twice became the governor general of what was then known as New France. Quebec City, the provincial capital, and the province itself was named after an Algonquin expression that translated to "narrow passage".
10. Montreal, Quebec's largest city, is located on an island.

Answer: True

The city of Montreal is situated on an island of the same name, which looks roughly triangular in shape. The St. Lawrence River flows around the southern and eastern portions of the island, while the Riviere des Prairies (River of the Prairies) flows alongside the northwest portion of the island. Across of the Riviere des Prairies is another island named Ile Jesus (aka Jesus Island), where the city of Laval can be found. Both islands are part of the Hochelaga Archipelago which contains dozens of smaller islands in an area where the Ottawa and St. Lawrence Rivers converge.
