Einstein was offered but refused as he believed he was not suited for the job of a president. Weizmann was president from 1949 to 1952.

Answer: 1948

This war resulted in about 6,000 casualties - and cost fewer lives than later Arab-Israeli wars. The war established Israel as a viable independent state.
3. What was the *original* function of what later became the Israeli Intelligence Service, Mossad (then known as Palmach)?

Answer: Illegal immigration

Mossad, which was then known as Palmach, had as its original puropse the organization of the illegal immigration of Jews to Palestine while the country was under British rule (1917-1948). The British government had quotas on the number of Jews allowed to migrate there legally. (Note: a range of groups organized illegal immigration from 1934 onwards).

Isser Harel resigned due to differences with Ben Gurion in 1963 and was replaced by Meir Amit.

This is widely acclaimed as one of the greatest commando operations of the 20th century. Yoni Nethanyahu, brother of the former PM Benjamin Nethanyahu, was the only commando casualty of the Operation.

Initially, Israel relied heavily on France for military aircraft. The United States was reluctant to begin an arms race in the Middle East, but as Nasser continued buying weapons from the USSR in the 1960s the arms sales by America were authorized. It was the sale of the 50 phantoms that marked the real beginning of the US-Israel weapon deals.
