Answer: Virginia

Many of our founding fathers and well know men of our nation such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson have come from Virginia. Did you know Sam Houston was one of them? He was born March 2nd, 1793.
2. In what two states was Sam Houston an elected representative?

Answer: Texas and Tennessee

He was a state representative from Tennessee (1823-1827) and then a senator from Texas (1846-1859).
3. When he was a teen what native tribe adopted Sam Houston?

Answer: Cherokee

He left his family at age 16. His fathered died when he was young and Houston did not like farming or working in the family store.
4. In whose regiment was Houston placed during the war of 1812?

Answer: Andrew Jackson

Scott was a General in the U.S. army for almost 50 years. William Henry Harrison would find fame in the War of 1812, going on to be elected as the 9th president of the United Sates of America. He would then become the first to die in office. Houston served under Andrew Jackson for around a year before becoming injured in 1814. Andrew Jackson would go onto to be a war hero after the Battle of New Orleans.

He would subsequently be elected the 7th president of the United States of America.
5. In what battle was of the War of 1812 was Sam Houston injured?

Answer: Battle of Horseshoe Bend

The battle took place in March of 1814. Houston recovered from his injuries and retained his commission. He would be promoted to second lieutenant.
6. Why did Houston resign from the army in 1818?

Answer: He was at odds with John C. Calhoun over the handling of the Cherokee

Houston wore an Indian headdress to a meeting between Calhoun and Cherokee leaders. This did not sit well with Calhoun. At this time Calhoun was the secretary of war under James Monroe. The two would dislike each other for life.
7. What happened at the convention of 1836?

Answer: All three of these

The convention was held to determine further action during the Texas Revolution. Houston having shown previous leadership was selected to head the convention. Here they declared independence from Mexico.

Childress County in Texas is named for George Childress.
8. Sam Houston led Texas to a decisive victory during the Texas Revolution at the battle of what?

Answer: San Jacinto

The Revolution was fought between Mexico and Texas between 1835 and 1836. The Battle of Gonzales was the first battle of the Texas Revolution. The Alamo could be considered the turning point in the Texas Revolution but was a loss for the Texans. Many considered it a moral victory which led to the tide turning in the Texans favor.
9. Sam Houston was elected president of Texas. Who was the interim prior to Houston taking office.

Answer: David Burnet

Lamar was the second president of Texas while Jones was the 4th. Sam Houston was elected twice as the first and third president of Texas. Fanin was colonel during the Texas Revolution. He and all his troops were killed after the battle of Coleto Creek in 1836. This became know as Goliad Massacre.

Houston was elected in 1836 and then again in 1841.
10. Why did Houston "step down" as Governor of Texas?

Answer: He refused to join the confederacy

Houston actually had support during the 1860 presidential election. He did not want Texas to join the confederacy. This was very unpopular and he stepped down and allowed Edward Clark to become governor of Texas.

He was elected governor in 1859 and served until 1861.

The new governor Edward Clark supported ceding from the North.
