Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The ancient Greeks used two styles of painting on their pottery. Which was the oldest, black figure or red figure?

Answer: black figure

The black-figure pottery had black silhouette-like black figures (women had white faces) on a reddish clay background, and lines were incised into the surface of the pots to define and decorate. Somewhere around 500 B.C. the red-figure replaced the black-figure style.

The artist set red figures against a black background and painted the faces, bodies, and draperies with a brush to create more complex images.
2. What is one of the most famous shapes in the skyline of Florence, Italy?

Answer: The Duomo

The Duomo in Florence was completed by 1400 with the exception of the cupola (dome). Scaffolding could not span the 140 foot diameter, and current building techniques couldn't support the size and weight of the required dome. Brunelleschi designed the cupola of the Duomo after he studied the building techniques used in the ancient buildings in Rome.

He designed a cupola with an inner and outer shell that were attached with a common ribbing. The smaller inner shell was thicker and carried most of the weight, the outer shell was thinner and lighter.

A stairway between the shells was used by the workers instead of scaffolding.
