Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What actor/actress won a Golden Globe award for this film?

Answer: Michael Caine

Horrocks and Blethyn were nominated, but it was Michael Caine who won. Mr. Caine said, on "Inside the Actor's Studio" that the song he sang at the end of the film was the hardest thing he had to do as he's not at all a singer.
2. Jane Horrocks did all her own singing.

Answer: True

Because L.V. is so shy and doesn't really speak for herself, she even imitated the voices of Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland by reciting some of the lines from films they were in. During the fire, she goes into "Lions and tigers and bears, oh my" from "The Wizard of Oz." Close your eyes and you'd swear it was Judy!
3. The original stage play was written FOR Jane Horrocks.

Answer: True

Written by Jim Cartwright. Jane Horrocks wasn't even the first chioce for the film!
4. What was the title of that original stage play?

Answer: The Rise and Fall of Little Voice

L.V. probably could have gone on to great stardom, but she was way too shy - almost to the point of autism. Jane Horrocks is more interested in her family (she has a couple of kids) than in any great stardom herself.
5. For the movie, who was Hollywood's first choice?

Answer: Gwyneth Paltrow

Originally Hollywood also wanted Paltrow's then boyfriend, Brad Pitt to play Ewan McGregor's part.
6. Ewan McGregor plays Bill. What is his occupation?

Answer: telephone installer

"Not the famous Phone Bill?" Brenda Blethyn had the funniest lines!
7. What animals does Bill raise?

Answer: pigeons

"It can be boring to the non-enthusiast." An understated performance by McGregor especially in comparison to his role as junkie Mark Renton in "Trainspotting."
8. What is L.V.'s real name? First name only.

Answer: Laura

At the end, in a confrontation, her mother, as played by Brenda Blethyn, exclaims "L.V!" and L.V. storms off saying "My name is Laura!"
9. What is the name of Michael Caine's character?

Answer: Ray Say

Harry Palmer was Caine's name in "The Ipcress Files." Mr. Boo, played by Jim Broadbent, is the rather greasy night club owner. Michael Caine used his real cockney accent for "Little Voice," but it was a bit tempered. He said on "Inside the Actor's Studio" that if he spoke in his real accent, no one would understand a word he said!
10. Jane Horrocks accent is quite regional. From what part of Great Britain does she come?

Answer: Lancashire

The vowel pronunciation is the give-away. You can hear it even better on that television show she was on.
11. On what British comedy television series was Jane Horrocks a regular?

Answer: Absolutely Fabulous

Jane played Jennifer ("Edina") Saunders' vacuous personal assistant, the aptly named "Bubble."
12. Which singer is L.V. mimicking when Mr. Boo hears her for the 1st time?

Answer: Judy Garland

She also did a cracking imitation of Marilyn. Patti Page doesn't feature in at all. L.V. is heard from her bedroom window in the street singing "Over The Rainbow," and since the electricity had gone off, it couldn't possibly have been the record player.
13. L.V.'s dead father's first name was Francis.

Answer: True

It is seen on the now-closed record shop he once owned. I couldn't include the last name because I'm not sure if it was "Hoff" or "Huff." Having just seen this on TV, I could SWEAR it was "Hoff," but in one review during my research, somebody spelled it the other way. L.V. and her mother live in the back and upstairs of the shop. Brenda Blethyn: "Imagine signing the register "'Mr. & Mrs. F. Hoff!'"
14. Notice I haven't mentioned L.V.'s mothers name? What is it?

Answer: Mari

A bit tricky if you are not a credits-watcher! A brassy, browsy character, the opposite of her repressed daughter.
15. L.V. does a second show after first refusing.

Answer: False

L.V.: "'Once' was said.." So, Ray Say (Caine) gets up and sings (screams, more like it) "It's Over," meaning his career as an agent!
