Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following countries was the first to win the contest in the 21st century - that is, in the year 2000?

Answer: Denmark

Sweden held the contest in 2000 but Denmark were the winners with the song 'Fly On The Wings Of Love'. Azerbaijan did not debut at the contest until 2008. Greece did not participate in the contest that year after withdrawing at the last minute.
2. France won the contest in 1962 but refused to host the contest the following year due to expense. Which country held the contest instead?

Answer: United Kingdom

There have been a number of occasions when the winning country has declined to host the contest. In 1960, 1972 and 1974 the UK hosted the contest despite not winning the previous year because the winning country could not afford to host. In 1980, the Netherlands held the contest as Israel could not, due to expense; the date the contest was to be held on was Israel's Remembrance Day.
3. The contest introduced a brand new Eurovision anthem, 'We Write the Story' in Malmo, Sweden in 2013. Which DJ co-wrote the track with ABBA's Benny and Bjorn?

Answer: Avicii

Avicii is a Swedish DJ. The song was first performed during the final of the 2013 contest which Avicii attended. The winner that year was Denmark with the song 'Only Teardrops'.
4. Between 1987 and 1997, one country won the contest five times. Their previous entries have included a turkey and twins. Which country is this?

Answer: Ireland

Dustin the Turkey was the Irish entrant in 2008, unfortunately he didn't make it to the grand final. Jedward represented Ireland in 2011 and 2012 placing eighth and nineteenth respectively. Ireland won three times in a row between 1992 and 1994.
5. Which of the following artists have NOT participated in the contest?

Answer: Cilla Black

Cilla Black was offered the opportunity to represent the United Kingdom but refused due to the fact that Sandie Shaw had won the previous year and she saw it unlikely that two British female solo artists would win two years in a row. ABBA represented Sweden in 1974 when the contest was hosted in Brighton, UK. Katrina and the Waves represented the UK in 1997 and Celine Dion sang for Switzerland in 1988.
6. Which of the following countries won the contest during their début year?

Answer: Serbia

Serbia entered the contest for the first time as an independent state in 2007. Latvia won the contest for the first time in 2002, their second year. Azerbaijan managed a win in their fourth year of competing, 2011. Finland, however, did not win the contest until 2006, 45 years after first entering.
7. Alexander Rybak's 'Fairytale' was the first entry to ever reach the 300 points mark. What country was he representing when he won the contest in 2009?

Answer: Norway

In Moscow 2009, 'Fairytale' received a record breaking score of 387 points, receiving points from every country except Norway itself. Norway received 16 maximum scores in 2009 which was more than any other country in the history of the contest. This record was beaten in 2013 by Sweden.
8. A number of countries who are geographically outside of Europe are eligible to enter the contest. Which of these countries is NOT eligible?

Answer: Bhutan

Morocco entered the contest for the first time in 1980. Countries must be an member of the EBU to enter the contest. Countries such as Tunisia, Kazakhstan, Qatar and Lebanon have shown interest in joining the contest. Vatican City is also eligible to enter although due to their television network showing only religious programming it is unlikely they will ever enter.
9. In Norway in 2010, one of the entrants was disturbed during their performance by a stage invader. Can you remember which Big Five country was interrupted on stage?

Answer: Spain

Daniel Diges performed the song 'Algo pequeñito' at the 2010 contest in Oslo. He was allowed to perform the song again at the end of the show once all the other countries had sung. The jury vote based on the dress rehearsal so the voting was not affected too much by the interruption. Spain finished in 15th place with a total of 68 points.
10. A tie-break situation occurred for the first time in 1969 when four countries won the contest. As there was nothing in the rules to deal with this kind of situation they were all crowned winners. Which of these countries were NOT one of the four?

Answer: Germany

The rules were changed to make sure nothing like this would happen again. The joint win caused a number of countries to withdraw their entry for the next contest. Lulu entered the contest representing the United Kingdom with the song 'Boom Bang-a-Bang'. Germany placed eighth that year.
