Turning it Around Trivia Quiz

Many people know Duran Duran as pretty boys who played danceable pop. If you are a Duranie, though, you no doubt see them as more than that, including their lesser known stuff---particularly their b-sides and demos. If so, this quiz is for you.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What song from the first album was later replaced with "Is There Something I Should Know?" on a newer edition?

Answer: To the Shore

"Sound of Thunder" was actually the first song the full, original line-up wrote. "Friends of Mine" is still often played in concerts and "Girls on Film" was a big hit.
2. "Planet Earth" was the first song the full original line-up (Lebon, Rhodes, Taylor, Taylor, Taylor) wrote together.

Answer: False

"Sound of Thunder" was actually the first. The band already had the music and Simon just added a poem of his on top of it. "Planet Earth" was the first single.
3. "Secret Oktober" was written in 1997.

Answer: False

I'm not sure how long Simon had been working on the lyrics but the words were put to music in a single night. They had to put together a b-side quickly for "Union of the Snake". This would make the release in the early eighties, around 1983. But they do rework the song for when they play it in concert.
4. Duran Duran wrote a song called "Seven and the Ragged Tiger".

Answer: True

The lyrics for it can be found online and there is a rough demo out there which the band has admitted to but there's also a fake one out there too which sounds much cleaner. It was never officially released. "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" eventually evolved into "The Seventh Stranger".
5. "I Believe/All I Need To Know" is the b-side to what single (in reference to the 1986-1995 U.S. box set)?

Answer: All She Wants Is

It actually started off as two songs which is why it is called a medley, but it's not really. "We Need You" was the b-side to "Skin Trade", "Secret Oktober" was the b-side to "Union of the Snake". "Ordinary World" had older singles along with one of singer Simon's wife's favorite DD songs "My Antarctica".
6. Which single has the read poems "God" and "This Is How a Road Gets Made" on it (in reference to the 1986-1995 U.S. single boxset)?

Answer: Do You Believe In Shame?

Another b-side to this single was "The Krush Brothers LSD Edit". Simon, John and Nick of Duran Duran were The Krush Brothers, but only for one single. LSD stands for "Lake Shore Driving" which was an extension of "The Edge of America" off the "Big Thing" album in 1988.
7. What was the remix of "All Along the Water" called?

Answer: Waterbabies

"Yo Bad Azzizi" was a b-side along with "Waterbabies" on "Serious", the single. The "Yo Homeboy Mix" was for the single "The Flame" from the Duran Duran splinter group Arcadia. "Blue Silver" was the acoustic version of "The Chauffeur".
8. What song does "Yo Bad Azzizi" mock?

Answer: Is There Something I Should Know?

Apparently the line "You're about as easy as a nuclear war" from "Is There Something I Should Know?" can be misheard as "yo bad azzizi..." so Duran Duran made up a whole new song around that. It was the b-side to "Serious".
9. The version of "The Reflex" on Greatest (the greatest hits cd) is the same as the version on "Seven and the Ragged Tiger".

Answer: False

It was actually a remix on "Greatest". The remix was also released as the single version.
10. "What Happens Tomorrow" originally had a bridge which was cut out and eventually became what song?

Answer: Silent Icy River

It was the b-side to the single of "What Happens Tomorrow". "Know It All" was the b-side to "Sunrise". "Finest Hour" was the 8th track on "Astronaut".
