Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The most notable of Elizabeth I's cousins are Mary Queen of Scots, Lady Jane Grey, and Thomas Howard, who all played major roles in British history. But do you know this less notable cousin, Baron Hunsdon, the son of Anne Boleyn's sister?

Answer: Henry Carey

Henry Carey was the son of Mary Boleyn and William Carey, although he was rumored to be the son of Henry VIII himself. He was actually very good friends with Elizabeth, and although he did not start rebellions or cause disruptions like most of her other cousins, he still played his own part in the politics of Tudor England.
2. When most people think of Katherine Howard's execution, they think of Thomas Culpepper and Francis Dereham, who were convicted with her. But one man, her former music teacher and love interest, is often left out. Who is he?

Answer: Henry Manox

Henry Manox was Katherine's music teacher when she was only about twelve or thirteen. She had a reputation for being very flirtatious and beautiful, and he fell in love with her. She refused to sleep with him, because of his low standing, but they did enjoy some petting together. He was incriminated in her confession.
3. Most of us know that science and medicine were still in their early years during the Tudor Era. However, do you know the name of this alchemist who befriended Elizabeth I and tried to cast fortunes with her?

Answer: John Dee

Alchemy was the 'science' trying to turn base metal into gold. However, John Dee was fascinated by this study, and he believed that anything was possible. Elizabeth, who was always keen to know what the future held in store for her, worked with him as he tried to make predictions, but we do not know how accurate they were with their studies.
4. It is well known that Elizabeth I never married or had children. However, she became the godmother of many court children. Can you name this famous godson, who caused trouble with his risqué poetry and ingenious inventions?

Answer: John Harington

John Harington was the son of John and Isabella Harington, who were close friends of Elizabeth I. Young John was extremely smart, but repeatedly caused mischief at court. One of his most important inventions was the water closet, an early form of the toilet.
5. Thomas More is well remembered for his execution and is revered even today as a Roman Catholic saint. Who was his second wife, who saw him go to the block?

Answer: Alice Middleton

Thomas was not cut out for the Tudor court. Really, he was a family man at heart, and preferred to spend his time with his children and his wife, Alice. She had been a widow when he married her. She outlived him, when he was executed for treason in 1535.
6. Katherine of Aragon's seven years of widowhood were hard, not only for her, but for her servants, who suffered of lack of food and wages. What was the first name of the only maid-of-honor to break down under the strain and leave Katherine's service?

Answer: Francesca de Carceres

Because of the lack of funds, no one, not even Princess Katherine, had enough to live on. Their clothing was tattered, their living conditions were unhealthy, and their food was rotten and scarce. Wages were nonexistent. Most of the ladies carried on for Katherine's sake, but Francesca couldn't bear it any longer, and she left Katherine's service.
7. Thomas Wyatt and Philip Sidney were two of the primary poets of Henry VIII's time. However, this man, the Earl of Surrey, was also a poet, and his poetry is read just as widely as the others. Who is this noble writer?

Answer: Henry Howard

Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, was the son of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk. He was therefore the first cousin of Anne Boleyn. He wrote an abundance of sonnets, including one about Thomas Wyatt, his fellow poet. He died before his father and so he never inherited the title of Duke, but it passed to his son, Thomas, who would end up being executed for treason when he tried to marry Mary Queen of Scots and usurp the throne from Elizabeth I.
8. When we remember the unfortunate men who were convicted of adultery with Anne Boleyn, we think of Brereton, Norris, Weston, Smeaton, and George Boleyn. However, there were other men arrested that were not executed, but released. Can you pick out their names?

Answer: Richard Page and Thomas Wyatt

Both Paget and Wyatt were arrested with the five other men. They were both convicted, as well. However, Henry VIII decided that enough were to die, and when London finally settled down after the executions, they were both released.
9. Katherine of Aragon is well known, but can you name her sister, the Queen of Castile, who she tried to scheme to meet during her years of divorce?

Answer: Juana la Loca

Juana la Loca, also known as Joanna the Mad, was an older sister of Katherine of Aragon. As her name implies, she was somewhat unstable, and was made more so by the death of her beloved husband, who she was obsessed with. She inherited Castile on her mother Isabella's death, but when her mental instability became too great, her father Ferdinand took back control of the kingdom of Castile and united it with Aragon once again.
10. A position as a maid-of-honor or lady-in-waiting to the Queen of England was a mother's dream for their young daughters. One mother grew so obsessed with getting her daughter a place, she showered Jane Seymour with gifts, until Jane agreed to pick at least one of her daughters. Can you name the daughter she picked, who ended up becoming a great favorite of Henry VIII?

Answer: Anne Basset

Jane commanded Lady Basset to send both of her young daughters to court with their best dresses so she could pick the one she liked best. Anne turned out to be the lucky winner, and became a maid-of-honor. She was very popular at court, and even held the attention of Henry VIII, although she was able to avoid acquiring any hint of scandal and behaved perfectly.
