Australia itself came in at number 11 on the WHO list in 2013. The average life expectancy was 83 years at the time. New Zealand was 81.7 years. Tonga dropped down to 74.5 years and Samoa was 74 years. Willem Janszoon tried to settle in Australia, but eventually gave up and returned home after fighting against the Aborigines.

The British first sighted Australia in 1622, and it was the Englishman Captain James Cook who claimed Australia for Britain in 1770 when he made landfall near what became Sydney.

The first colony was started some 18 years later when eleven ships under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip landed in 1788.

The situation was eventually settled by agreement between the two nations.
