Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Knicks ended a playoff drought by qualifying for the playoffs in the final game of the 1987-1988 season. What team did they beat to get into the playoffs?

Answer: Indiana Pacers

The Knicks finished the season 38-44 and sneaked into the playoffs with a victory over the Pacers in the final game of the season. They were the #8 seed and faced the #1 seed, the Boston Celtics.
2. From 1988-2001, how many times were the Knicks eliminated in the 1st round of the playoffs?

Answer: 3 times

They lost to Boston 3-1 in the 1987-1988 season, 3-0 to the Chicago Bulls in the 1991-1992 season, and 3-2 to the Toronto Raptors in the 2000-2001 season.
3. The Knicks won a playoff series against the Chicago Bulls while Michael Jordan was in the lineup and active for the Chicago Bulls?

Answer: False

The Knicks only eliminated the Bulls once during this time period. It was in the 1993-1994 season while Michael Jordan was a member of the Birmingham Barons. It still took them 7 games and a phantom foul call in Game 5 that let Hubert Davis sink 2 free throws to lead them to victory and a 3-2 series lead.
4. At the end of an exciting game against the Bulls in Chicago in the 1988-1989 season, a member of the Knicks hit a 4-point play to tie the game. Who was this Knick?

Answer: Trent Tucker

This was in the second round. It was Game 6 and Trent Tucker was fouled while sinking a three point shot. The coach of the Bulls at the time, Doug Collins, ran onto the court in exasperation. It would still not be enough though, as Michael Jordan was fouled and sank two free throws to re-take the lead. Johnny Newman's desperation three point heave bounced off the rim and the Knicks were eliminated in six games.
5. The Knicks made it to the NBA finals to face the Houston Rockets in the 1993-1994 season. What seed were the Knicks that year?

Answer: #2 seed

The Knicks were the #2 seed that year and were second to the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks were eliminated by the Indiana Pacers who then played the Knicks in a thrilling seven game series that will be remembered for heroics by Reggie Miller as well as his jarring back and forth with celebrity Spike Lee.

Their other NBA finals appearance for the Knicks in this time span was in the 1998-1999 season against the San Antonio Spurs and they were a #8 seed that year.
6. The Knicks swept this team one year and then literally brought out a broom and began sweeping the floor on their court. What team was this? (1988-1988 season)

Answer: Philadelphia 76ers

This was after the first round of the playoffs and they downed the Sixers 3-0. It was not the classiest of moves and coach Rick Pitino was unhappy with both Charles Oakley and Gerald Wilkins, who had perpetrated the event.
7. Which team did the Knicks not face in the playoffs between 1988-2000?

Answer: Orlando Magic

The Knicks defeated the New Jersey Nets 3-1 in the opening round of the 1993-1994 season. They defeated the Atlanta Hawks 4-0 in the second round of the 1998-1999 season. They defeated the Charlotte Hornets twice, 4-1 in the second round of the 1993-1994 season and 3-0 in the first round of the 1996-1997 season. They did not match up with the Orlando Magic during these years.
8. The San Antonio Spurs swept the New York Knicks 4-0 in the NBA Finals to culminate the 1998-1999 season?

Answer: False

This was a strike-shortened season and the Knicks were a #8 seed and made it all the way to the NBA Finals. They managed to win one game, which was the first game at Madison Square Garden before losing the next two on their home floor and exiting with a 4-1 series loss.
9. Patrick Ewing missed a finger roll in Game 7 at Madison Square Garden that eliminated the Knicks in the 1995 play-offs. What team left New York victorious?

Answer: Indiana Pacers

This was redemption for the Pacers who had blown a 3-1 lead to have to play Game #7 at the Garden. The year before, they had blown a 3-2 lead in the semi-finals. It was actually the third year in a row that these teams met, with the Knicks winning 3-1 in the first round in the 1993-1994 season.
10. If the Chicago Bulls were a bugaboo for the Knicks, it could be said that the Knicks were a bugaboo for the Miami Heat. The Knicks shocked the Heat in the 1998-1999 season by being the first ever #8 Eastern Conference seed to knock off a #1 seed. They also knocked the Heat out of the playoffs the year before. What seed were they that year?

Answer: 7

The Knicks knocked Miami out of the playoffs three straight years but did it as a #7 and a #8 seed in the 1997-1998 and 1998-1999 seasons. It was redemption for the Knicks as they lost to the Heat the year before after leading 3-1 and lost many players for games 6-7 after a bench-clearing brawl. Jeff Van Gundy, the Knicks coach seemed to have the number of ex-Knicks coach, Pat Riley.
