For instance, if a barge from Knoxville, TN, has cargo destined for Tampa, FL, the barge does not have to travel all the way down the Tennessee, Ohio, and Mississippi to get to the Gulf. Instead, it can take the Tenn-Tom Waterway to Mobile, cutting the trip almost in half.

Not only does the Chattahoochee provide the Atlanta metro area with most of its water, it also creates a natural border between the states of Alabama and Georgia. Another responsibility it carries is the Time Zone line, between Eastern and Central. Though Phenix City is in Central, a good deal of its residents operate in Eastern time.
